Question About Out Nation re: Affiliation

Does the US have any affiliation to any religion?

Of course you have your Muslim nations in the Middle East; and your Catholic Nations of Europe; but can the US claim any religion?

But let me get to my point. No disrespect but why does the country honor religious holidays by shutting things down?

I can understand Christmas and Thanksgiving because people are generally BUSY (even heathens) but I was somewhat bothered that I went to JC Penny and it was closed because it was "honoring" Easter. Besides that here and there Easter Dinners that some families participate in and of course in the black community us spending all of our rent $ on clothes we won't wear for another year; WHAT do people really do on Easter?

I just feel that Easter is a more "religious" holiday than TK and XMAS. TK and XMAS are somewhat celebratory holidays with religious undertones.

Please don't try and turn this post on me and call me disrespectful or blasphemous because those are NOT my intentions at all. I just want an explanation as to WHY a religious practice is somewhat "forced" upon us as a Nation.

If I offended anyone, "I am sorry in advanced"
    Concrete evidence/videos please

Go to church, eat dinner, travel, and not go to the mall.

It's a double factor on Easter; nobody wants to work, and nobody wants to shop. On top of paying out the *** for employees, stores would be very unproductive, so there's no reason to be open on Easter.

Nothing is forced upon anyone. If someone feels their business will thrive on Easter Sunday, they're well within their rights to be open, but there's going to be a very negative economic impact by being open on Easter.

And no the US does not have a national religion.

Re: Question About Out Nation re: Affiliation

I know Wikipedia isn't the know all, but they have a reference to a real study that says 78.5% of the US adhere to Christianity. I think that's why you have a country that celebrates a lot of those holidays.

My company has 2 "diversity day" holidays I can use whenever I want. If you're not Christian then you can use them to celebrate whatever you want.

Oh, and Thanksgiving has absolutely no religious base whatsoever...it's a national thing, not a religious thing like Christmas or Easter.

I'm Catholic, but I don't practice and didn't do anything for Easter. At the same point I don't really do much shopping on Sundays, especially a NCAA March Madness Sunday, so didn't impact me at all.

It's cool if you use Wiki; I won't use the "Wiki isn't a reliable source" - card.

Honestly I would agree that we give Christmas too much respect in this country. It would seem to defy any 1st Amendment logic that Christmas is recognized as an official federal holiday. Maybe if I get bored I'll play on LexisNexis and try to find a better answer. If I do, I'll post here or PM you if this thread gets locked.

Thanks for understanding where I am coming from. Yea if this post happens to get childish and wild and they lock it I would appreciate it if you sent me something on the subject.

But someone told me that this country was built on Christian beliefs when I asked them this same question, so go figure.

Re: Question About Out Nation re: Affiliation

I dont think the US was founded on Christian Beliefs, more likely Christian Values. The forefathers deliberately tried to keep the undertones of the Church out of documents like the Constitution/Decl. of Indep.

Being that the majority of people in the US are Christians I dont believe there is anything wrong saying that we are a Christian nation.

Don't know how I feel about that statement. Give me a minute to think about it though.

Just to clarify what I said, We (the Fed Govt) observe (work-closed) Christian Holidays. Not even Jewish Holidays close the Fed down, some schools-yes but Uncle Sam-no.

Nothing wrong with saying that because its true. This country was founded on Christian values and beliefs. Pull a coin out of your pocket...what does it say?.....in God we trust. I'm pretty sure It's talking about the Christian God.

Like an above poster stated, 78.5% of Americans adhere to Christianity. Thats the majority and we live in a democracy, so the majority should represent who we are IMO..

thats not the question here...no one is disputing your right to believe in whatever you want to,

DCs question was about what is the religious affiliation associated with the US if there is even one.
