    How Do You Overcome This?

I try to surround my self with positive people so it makes my life a little bit easier, but on my baseball team there is no way getting around it. In reality I recieve about 5 put-downs for every compliment I get. It's not that I'm bad or anything, we just have a bunch of rude people on our team. Our team could probably play really good if we would encourage each other, but instead of doing that we decide that its better to put someone down any chance they get. I seriously get made fun of because I work hard in practice and try hard. How is it possible to overcome that? I usually try to isolate it but when you walk in that dugout or go to practice, there is no way to ignore it.

Keep doing what you do. In three years, you'll be starting for a four-year university and they will be red-shirting for a community college.

      Exactly.

Also, I'm not a violent or disrespectful person by any means but I've found that when you come across people like the ones on your baseball team you have to take shots back at them when they make fun of you or even threaten to beat the hell out of a person or two... I know you won't like to hear that but thats how the game is played.

Ignore it and don't let it affect you. Or you can use what they say and use it as motivation to get better and just prove to all of them that you're better.

Just depends how strong you are mentally.

Or perhaps, "Well, I had sex with YOUR wife!"

Seriously though, Acid had a good suggestion in trying to use their negativity as a source of motivation.

Get rich and famous playing ball, then write a book. You can say you overcame everybody hating you - then when they see that they'll all come out of the woodwork going "Man we never hated you... Gimme moneez."

I quit when this happened despite giving up the one thing I loved and could have done work in (baseball.) I'm weak, and regret it every day.

Gets 'em every time. Payback is a bitch.

Seriously though do what Acid said. Feed off of it. Either that or just go ballistic one day, and tell everyone to shut the fark up and change their attitude. There's a guy I play softball with that gets really negative during games sometimes and it ticks me off. How does that help at all? It doesn't need to constantly be puppies and rainbows all the time but the negativity tightens everyone up. I talked to him about it one game last year and he really became conscious about it. Helped matters the rest of the way.

I really think it reflects off the coach but, I see where your going Kibbles. We started off the season like 6-1 and then the tensions grew and now were like 8-9 or something. I have had a little blow up, and I guarentee you if someone complains about practice today I'm going to get on thier case.

I'd agree with that assessment. When I was in HS I was in a similar situation on the lacrosse team. We had a new coach come in who was absolutely atrocious. He ran our best Midfielder off of the team and was just awful. He let us do whatever we wanted during practice and needless to say when you allow 16-18 years to do that the results are piss poor, we were the second worst team in the state, despite being one of the 4-5 most talented teams in the state. No one cared, I tried my hardest to rally the troops as the team captain, but it fell on deaf ears and I took **** for it.

I still hate that man to this day, especially since he tried to sabotage me playing in college.

Re: How Do You Overcome This?

Chemistry problems on sports teams suck.

Up through my junior year in football, we were coached by the best public football coach in Maryland history. After he was forced to retire (or give up his retirement), the school hired our assistant coach. Now, the assistant coach was the relateable coach most teams have; the young guy who's in the weight room, you joke with, and generally like. However, as a head coach, that doesn't work.

We had ego problems that would have been difficult for a good coach to manage, but for this dude, it was impossible. On offense, we had 4 returning starters, all of whom were all conference and all played different positions, and 4 more All conference defensive players. Unfortunately, we all hated each other, because clearly, each one of us was not only the best player on the team, but possibly the best football player of all time. Our coach ****ed it up when he decided to hype 5 of the players while leaving the other 3 of us out. Problem was, he left out me (the only returning OL), our running back, and our Dlineman (who in our system essentially blocks for the LBs). Ended up with me rarely practicing and doing as little as possible to help the 4 junior OL, getting into physical confrontations on the sidelines with other players and our OC, and in general the team hating each other.

You don't want that. At the same time, nobody likes the suckup who tries hard when it's clearly not asked (walkthroughs and such). I'd recommend taking it a little easier in practice and simply not talking to anyone.
