    anyone here from New Orleans?

I'm looking at a job down there and would like to know a little bit about the place from people who are down there.

I've never been there, so it'll be a big move for me even though I don't have anything tying me down here. If the job interviews heat up, I'll certainly consider going down there first to check it out.

So I'd just like some info or opinions on things like weather, traffic, cost of living, public transportation, plus how the city is doing after Katrina. Also, where's the better places to look for apartments or housing.

As everyone knows it get's hot down there but during the winter it can surprisingly get pretty cold, in fact the Christmas before Katrina it actually snowed. It does rain a lot so you need to be prepared for that, it will look like a clear day then all of a sudden it'll start raining like a hurricane then just as soon as it started it will stop. As far as how the city's doing, it's better than it was after Katrina but there still isn't much that has been done. Alot of homes still aren't rebuilt and there are some areas that look like nothing has been done at all.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

As far as weather goes, be prepared for humidity in the summer. If you haven't experienced New Orleans humidity, stay hydrated. During the rainy season, it's not uncommon for flooding in certain areas of the city. Where area did you plan on moving to?

Traffic is not usually bad, except for normal work traffic from 9-10 and 4-6 in different areas. Usually heading downtown from the westbank it gets pretty jammed at the toll in the morning. Also, heading to or from the Metairie area is dreadful during the busy hours, but it's not as bad as other cities I've traveled to like Miami or Houston.

Cost of living before the storm was some of the lowest I've seen among major cities. After the storm, it's raised but not to the point of being unafforable. It wouldn't be out of the question to find a nice 2 bedroom apartment in a good area for about 750-900 a month.

If you're comparing public transportation to another major city like Chicago, you'll think it's terrible. But as far us locals we get where we need to get on time. It's all about getting acquainted with bus schedules and transfers as they can get a little confusing switching from RTA (downtown) to JET (westbank).

How the city is depends on who you ask really. I for one think it's almost back to what it was, but I only suffered a collapsed roof and a tree falling on my house. Now if you ask someone who is from the lower 9 or Lakeview or the east, they'll tell you something completely different. It's all about what area they're in and what stage of rebuild they're going through.

For apartments, it depends on what you'll be doing and where. Where will you be working? Are you still in school or interested in continuing your education? Would you rather have an apartment or rent a house or even buy a condo? There's a lot of questions you'd have to answer before you settle on a place. I'll gladly answer any questions you have just reply here.

Really I would try to live in a suburb and just drive to the NO for work. NO is a tourist city so traffic can get bad. But hell jobs are there by the 100s though. A lot of people never came back so there are a lot of vacant jobs there with a lot of new jobs and companies there as well.

I however can't take those NO summers......too humid for my blood LOL.

I probably would have loved living in New Orleans when I was in my early twenties and going out all the time. Now, I could care less about it but, then again I had a bad experience the first time I ever went to NO about 10 years ago.

I've lived in Baton Rouge for two years now and I've only when to NO about three times. Once for my friends B-Day, once for the Packers/Saints game on MNF and once to take my GF to the Zoo.

Yea New Orleans sucks the big one. It is a good get away place to hit up for a weekend of fun. But as far as living there..........NO. I will stick to Lafayette.

Going to N.O. this weekend for a bachelor party and jazzfest. Let the good times roll
