I agree with this. If you can afford to spend $20 at Chili's, you can likely afford $24. If that $4 is make or break, then spending $20 on dinner probably wasn't the wisest choice to begin with. And if you can afford to spend $200 at Morton's, then you can likely afford $240.
As you said, I'm not going to feel the difference between a $6 tip and an $8 tip, but at the end of the night if a few others do the same, that could be an extra $10 or $20 in the servers pocket. Probably help out a young college kid or a single mom or just a regular guy who serves as a profession.
At our work when someone does a great job their boss may reward them with a $5, $10 or $20 gift card and I know that even though this may be a small gesture, it is still appreciated to get something extra...i feel the same way with tipping.
I also don't like the excuse that not tipping will be balanced out by those who tip extra. The people that tip extra are usually doing it to reward the server in attempt to give them more....not to make up for what others failed to tip.
