Woman Wakes After Heart Stopped, Rigor Mortis Set In

Woman Wakes After Heart Stopped, Rigor Mortis Set In

    Friday, May 23, 2008

Val Thomas’ doctors honestly can’t explain how she is alive today.

Thomas, who lives in West Virginia, is being called a medical miracle after she suffered two heart attacks and had no brain waves for more than 17 hours; reports NewsNet5.com.

Thomas’ heart stopped around 1:30 a.m. Saturday and doctors said she had no pulse. Rigor mortis started to set in, and she was placed on a respiratory machine.

“Her skin had already started to harden and her fingers curled,” Thomas’ son, Jim, told NewsNet5.com. “Death had set in.”

Click here to discuss this story.

Thomas, 59, was rushed to a <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:State w:st="on"><st1lace w:st="on">West Virginia</st1lace></st1:State> hospital, where she was put on a special machine to induce hypothermia. This would allow her body to cool down for 24 hours before they would warm her up again, doctors explained.

However, Thomas’ heart stopped again after the procedure.

Her family said their goodbyes and Thomas’ tubes were removed, but she remained hooked on a ventilator as the possibility of organ donation was discussed.

However, Thomas woke up 10 minutes later and started talking.

“The nurse said, ‘I’m so sorry, Mrs. Thomas,’ and mom said, ‘That’s OK, honey, that’s OK,’” Jim Thomas said.

Val Thomas was transferred to the Cleveland Clinic so that specialists could check her out, but doctors said they could find nothing wrong with her.

“I know God has something in store for me, another purpose,” Val Thomas said. “I don’t know what it is, but I’m sure he’ll tell me.”

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

That's absolutely nuts. Stuff like that makes you think.

This is why I will be burried with an oxygen tank, a two-way radio, a flashlight, some earplugs, and an airhorn...and a gun if all else fails.

        Just in case.

I'm going to be frozen and brought back as a telekinetic robot super soldier, hopefully used in some sort of world domination plan.

As far as I'm concerned with this lady though, she's either been touched by Jesus or she's a zombie.

I don't think we can take that chance. Ma, get my shotgun.

Some sites are saying it was 17 hours and others are saying it was 17 minutes. I'd be willing to bet that 17 minutes is closer to reality.

I've seen 17 hours everyhwre, including Yahoo News (which was the AP report) -- so yeah, I think that's what it is... Rigor Mortis doesn't set in after 17 minutes, so that whole part of the story wouldn't make any sense...

Here's a video of the story. It says her heart stopped for 20 minutes. The whole rigor mortis portion of the story doesn't make any sense.

Re: Woman Wakes After Heart Stopped, Rigor Mortis Set In

It seems like the whole ordeal was 17 hours and she woke up 17 hours after her heart initially stopped at home. They rushed her to the hospital and put her on the hypothermia machine, but her heart stopped 2 more times after that. Once they had her on life support (where patients are not able to produce a heartbeat or brainwaves themselves) due to waiting for the organ donation decision, she woke up as they were removing her from the life support. The rigor mortis stuff was at the hospital where she was essentially dead, just on life support...

That's the sense I can make out of the story...

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
