Decide on a general area you want to go into. I have a MIS degree and that got me a consulting job. I didn't want to do anything with hardware, networking, etc. I was fine with programming, but I also didn't just want to sit and code all day. I like interacting with the business side of things, but still doing the development.
Any computer-related majors here?

Re: Any computer-related majors here?
I have a degree in computer and information security. I to was one of those people who wanted nothing to do with programming. I took 1 programming class and knew it was not for me. I am having trouble finding a computer job. I am caught in the old catch 22 of no one will hire me because I do not have experience, but how can I get experience if no one will hire me. If I could go back and do it over I would have gotten my degree in something else. It is looking more and more when I do find a new job it will not be in the computer field.Comment

I wouldn't mind moving down south. I could use a break from cold weather.
In the interview when they ask how do you hear about our company I can tell them fishepa at OS told me. Major brownie points for you buddy.
In all seriousness if I had the money I would consider moving. It is just not financially feasible at this time.Comment

Specialize in something specific. The degree I took was kind of a jack of all trades sort of thing and I never really found a job with it. Decided to go back to school for something else entirely.Comment

Re: Any computer-related majors here?
This man speaks the truth, no matter the project I happen to be working on, it usually involves a database. Also this opens up the field of ERP (SAP, PeopleSoft, etc) because they're all basically flavors of Oracle/SQL. Also try to take a basic business class, I see soooo many programmers that know nothing about the business (functional) side of the projects they are working on, it will make you a better programmer and you will have a leg up on learning how to work with a customer to get requirements clearly defined.Comment

You also need to be more than just a code monkey, like mentioned by frostbyte. Web sites are things people use, you'd be amazed at the crap I'll see some developers make. Sure, it works as specified, but looks uglier than that girl in the car model thread. You need to be able to go beyond just coding.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Whats with all you and your Windows technology advise?
Where are all my open source brothers at?
Dont forget about PHP , perl and MySQL and a intimate love for the Unix operating system. Knowing those will open up a lot more doors and allow you to work for a lot of really progressive companies.Return of the MackComment
