So yea...Flying On A Plane For The First Time In Years

Just got hired for this job and installing home security systems and they're flying me out to Indianapolis this sunday for a week(Flight and Hotel already paid for by them )to do my training. There are 5 classes that start Monday at 9am and go to 5pm and I will be getting paid for attending them as well . Since this will be my first time flying in this Post 9/11 World, I have a few questions for those that fly on the regular or have flown before:

    1. How soon should I arrive at the airport to go thru baggage check, pick up my tickets? Some have told me arrive an hour before my plane leaves and then I also heard 2 hours but I don't wanna get there and once I get through everything, wait for like an hour just to board the plane.

    2. I'm bringing my Xbox along with me as well, so will they let me bring that on the plane or will that have to go with my other luggage?

    3. Are we allowed to bring like Ipods and DVD players on the plane?

    4. For folks that stay in the Indianapolis area, what's there to do around there or what are some of the more popular stores/malls out there?

Preciate the tips and advice from ya'll as well because I already know I'm gonna be nervous like **** when I get on the plane because I ain't flown in YEARS and anytime I go traveling(whether be short distance or long distance) I ALWAYS drive lol

But yea...thanks for the tips and advice.

Well for starters I'd try to use the word bomb as often as I could in the airport and while boarding the plane.

      1. I always like to get to the airport an hour or an hour and a half just to make sure. It depends on the airport I guess, Denver can be a pain sometimes. I don't mind a little wait though.

      2. I think you should be fine. My brother took his Wii carry-on last time and had no issue.

      3. Ipods are fine, I always take mine.

      4. No clue.

        1. I go to the airport 1 and a half hours before the flight just incase their is a long line-up for baggage and all that stuff you have to go through.

        2. I'm not 100% sure but I think you can. I know that you can bring a laptop onboard with you for sure though.

        3. Yes you are.

        4. Can't help you with this one. Sorry.

          1) You HAVE TO be checked in at least 60 minutes prior to your flight for domestic travel. If this is your first time in a while, I'd recommend 90 minutes or so. Two hours will have you sitting around for a while. You'll still probably sit around for a while if you show up an hour and a half early, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

          2) You can bring this on the plane with you

          3) Yes, you are allowed

          4) Can't help you on this one

Don't be nervous about flying! Statistics prove that it's almost 10,000 times safer to fly than to drive. DC to Indianapolis is a nice length of a flight - just long enough for a comfortably sized plane, but not too long either. Try to enjoy it; it can be fun.

            Preciate that ya'll.

My plane leaves Sunday at 12:42 pm with a stopover in Detroit for an hour and a half and then go straight to Indy from there so I should be there sometime around 4:30. So imma try to get to the airport at least by 11:00 am and hope the line aint that long for baggage and security check.

So at least now I know imma have something to do while on the plane and some music to cruise to.

Figured I'd bring my Xbox because once class ends at 5pm then I know imma need something to do(unless there are some malls around)from then til the next morning. I know the Hotel has like an Exercise center so I might hit that up a few times.

Oh yea, breakfast/lunch/dinner are all being taken care of by my job.

So any money I bring most likely gonna be shopping and/or bar money

Tips: Don't take any shampoo, calonge, body wash, or lotion bottles with you in your carry on luggage.

Don't wear alot of metal **** so you won't be bothered with getting it all off before you go through the metal detector.

90 minutes should be fine on a Sunday. I've flown out of Reagan and Dulles about a billion times each, and "getting there early" times are always exaggerated, especially with the delays now.

Bring a book. You're going to be waiting regardless of how soon you get there, and a book is always the best solution.

A good rule of thumb is don't check things that you would really not want to lose...like a XBOX or laptop...those would be good things to carry on. If you carry on a laptop they will make you take it out of the bag and take the battery out as well when you go through the xray. I'm sure they'll make you take out the xbox too if you carry it on.

Yea,my folks told me the same thing about Dulles. Said it's not as bad as people or the news say it is(unless it's around a holiday)I'm flying out of BWI so I'm hoping there won't be any wait there.

You got any books you would recommend?

I honestly ain't read a book in YEARS lol

If your looking for something to do, you can check out an Indianapolis Indians game at Victory Field. I know they are at home until June 7th, and they always have at least one afternoon game on the weekend and through the week. Pretty close to the stadium are some decent restaurants depending on how much you are willing to spend. I HIGHLY recommend Alcatraz Brewing Company. They have their own microbrews and the beer and ales are very good. Circle Center Mall is always another option if you are looking to do as little shopping or maybe catch a movie. All of these locations are in the downtown vicinity. Maybe not your thing but, there are a few museums downtown too. Soldiers and Sailors War Monument and Museum is pretty cool and worth taking a look at. Taking a walk along the canals at White River State Park isn't bad either. The park is connected to the Indianapolis Zoo and IMAX theater. Be glad you aren't coming to the city during the winter, there is much more to do when it's nice outside. NCAA Hall of Champions is another place, but it is closed for renovations. Whatever you do stay away from the westside of town.

Haven't been there in years. It's used to be a nice but smaller mall on the north side of town, but I don't know anymore.
