I'm a black man, and it's a black thing. I don't remember when it started, but it's part of my local colloquialism.Favorites

Re: "In a minute"
It's a both thing. Since I live in MS, I'm around tons of country people and black people.
Most time white people say it, "I'll be there 'in a minute" Which means they are coming as soon as they can, but yeah no way it is going to be a minute. If it is a chick.. be prepared to wait FOREVER.
When my black friends say "in a minute" it actually can refer to like a billion things, but mostly "in a while" "Man I haven't had a hamburger this good 'in a minute'NCAA Vets League: Arkansas Razorbacks (9-2, 6-1)

Re: "In a minute"
Okay...serious old man question here. I've heard and read more and more of people using the phrase "in a minute" to describe a lengthy amount of time that has passed between events.
Examples:
"Man, I haven't talked to you in a minute!"
"Yeah, we hung out at that bar for a minute."
"I haven't been to that neighborhood in a minute!"
I don't get it! A minute is not a long amount of time. Why use it to describe the opposite? Can someone (probably younger) explain it to me? Where did it start? Why is it used? I honestly don't get it.Comment

Re: "In a minute"
I've heard the second example... not the first or third. I hear "just a second" or "one minute" more often when someone's asking somebody for something or what have you.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: "In a minute"
It's weird to me that there's so many people who haven't heard it before.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: "In a minute"
First time I've heard it. Doesn't bother me, especially when you compare it to the most ridiculous, idiotic saying on the planet that is catching fire and makes everyone who uses it sound like an effing moron: "IT IS WHAT IT IS."
Take care,

Chuck Swirsky killed that saying for me. He used to use it ALL THE TIME! I swear he'd say it like 10 times in one hour. At least he's stopped using it now but my God is it ever an annoying saying!Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: "In a minute"
It's just another one of those phrases that symbolize the era we live in. U know, when negative words are used to describe positive stuff. Like saying "That's sick!" which means "That's awesome!"...etc.
It's the same in my language. If u wanna say that something is great, u say that it's a "son of a biitch" (especially if u're less than 18)...etc.Last edited by youvalss; 06-06-2008, 04:24 PM.My Specs:
