Just happened to me last night

I live in an apartment complex with eight different buildings, 24 units per building. The last I heard (a few hours ago), about 16 people had their tanks emptied!!!! I had filled up on Friday night and my car was still registering full last night.

Man this really sucks!!! I don't have a locking gas cap so at first I was kicking myself for procrastinating on getting one. But, I was talking to one of my fellow victims this afternoon and he said that it didn't help him one bit...........stupid sons of beyothches drilled a hole in the guys tank and got his gas that way. Now, who in their right mind would drill into a tank of gasoline!!!!!! Must be pretty desperate for some fuel, sheeeeeesh!!!!

Is it illegal to set up a proximity mine these days???

I'll definitely get a locking gas cap. It will at least deter some people but it doesn't stop the guy/gal who drilled a hole in another tenants gas tank.

I might buy a pit bull and chain him to my rear axle, yeah that will work !!!! (just kidding of course)

People have always been stealing gas out of tanks, it's just more widespread these days with gas prices. There is a huge black market for gas.

True, I remember this happening even back when I was growing up. But like you said, it's only going to get worse as the gas $$$ increases

I wish a garage was an option for me. That would be the ultimate fix for this problem.

Just got off the phone with a friend who suggested a motion sensor device that would trigger if someone tries to open my gas cap. He said I could have an alarm or something go off inside my apartment alerting me and then I could react quickly possibly interrupting the thief.

Sound all good but two issues with that for me.........one, sounds expensive and two, would hate to show up to a gun fight carrying a baseball bat

What you would do is put a sensor on the door and somewhere inside where it would make contact (just like a door or window sensor). You might be able to wire that into your car alarm, not sure about that one, but I would think you could just wire another sensor in. If you couldn't do that, you would need a wireless sensor.

At times I've thought you should be able to put motion detection on a gun that would pop up, you would have an audible warning to back away from the car or you will be shot.

I do know a few people in the past who have had gas stolen but not recently, even though it doesn't surprise me at all that it's going on. Heard more stories lately of catalytic converters being taken.

someone that is crazy and/or desperate enough to go around stealing gas out of people's vehicles (especially right in front of their apartment) is probably crazy, stupid, and dangerous enough to carry something
