    Foreign Langauges

A majority of people take Foreign Languages in high school for a few years but has anyone gone farther than that? Where has it taken you and has it been of any benefit?

Ich lerne Deutsch seit drei Jahre. Wie lange hast du eine Sprache gelernt? Und wie viele?

How long did you learn those languages and how many? Anyone here fluent in a foreign language?

    I speak Hebrew pretty good...LOL
We study English here from elemntary school (3rd or 4th grade, not sure) 'til the end of highschool. I also had French in HS and maybe in junior-high (can't remember). We had to choice to study either French or Arabic, so naturally I picked French (not that I liked it either).

In reality, if you don't begin learn one before you're seven years old, you may have some trouble adapting to it as a second language. There are some exceptions, but making it a high school requirement isn't enough. It needs to begin in middle school (and for K - 6 schools, probably third or fourth grade). It just becomes too tough not to have to use English when learning Spanish, etc. Even for myself.
