In reality, where you do the majority of your coursework doesn't matter all that much for jobs because you can generally transfer into a better school if they see that you are trying and succeeding (if a good school is what you feel you need for your desired career). If you can manage to stay on track at a smaller, less-expensive school, then you would likely be able to move to a higher-level university later and get your degree from them instead.

Anyway, I guess you probably need to determine if college is the right path for whatever you want to do. Honestly, some people aren't cut out for college life and should just try to find quality work experience or go to a trade-specific school (auto mechanic is a big one) -- paying a bunch of money for a degree that you may not ever use is a waste of time/money. Don't take this as "eh screw it, just drop out" advice by any means -- just really think about what you want out of life and look to see what you need to do in order to do it. Some career fields are education-focused and all you need to get an entry-level job is a degree in that field -- others are experience and knowledge-based and a degree won't do a damn thing for you.

At this point, since you seem kind of conflicted or unsure about what you want to do -- definitely don't drop out of school altogether unless you have a distinct course set that doesn't require a degree. I'd suggest taking your parents up on their generous offer and stay with them while you focus on your academics at a smaller, cheaper school. If you don't know what you want to do, maybe some course you take will give you an idea -- then you can look at transferring to a better school if you think you'll need a "name" degree for the line of work you want.

Hope that helps... I'm only 23, but I work for my University full-time, and giving advice on academic/ career choices is part of my job. It's really just about keeping your goals clear and realistic while making sure to put the effort in on your end.
Good post. I was going to say the same thing.

thanks for the help guys... and it really DOES help. Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of my life. Heck... I'll start tonight.

I've already sent applications to 5 schools in NY, with transcripts... the whole works. Next thing I want to do is find a record company or music business of some sort to intern with (great idea btw... I mean, I've flirted with it before, but when someone else says it, it gave me the ambition). My sister will be excellent at assisting me with this process so I will enlist her help tomorrow.

Things will change. Just remain positive and work hard.

After my first year at college, I was just about to be shown the door. I went in trying to be a computer engineer and I realized it wasn't for me. My grades suffered. But I took two classes in the summer to get my grades back up again and I started on an upward trend.

My point is that you can be flunking now but it's not the end of the world. Things will always be hard in life. It's how positive you remain during the hardships that makes you successful.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Jesus, I feel for you bro. I can relate.

I haven't told anyone here this, but I'm in a similar boat. I started college away in Illinois for a semester until I transfered to Hawaii. Things seemed ok, but then one day during my first (and only) semester in Hawaii I was informed I would be no longer getting financial aid until I could find a suitable co-signer. Problem is you have to be 24 to get a student loan on your own. If your Stafford and Perkins loans don't cover what you owe, you're out. Well my parents owned a business and had to file bankruptcy on it, so the banks didn't care about my credit, but rather about my parents and rejected me.

Long story short, I'm living back at home so I can afford to pay cash for online classes and finish school.

I am 23, live with my parents (who are actually awesome) and take online classes in a town of 600 people in the middle of nowhere. I have no more social life, no more good friends (around me at least) and I have a job I hate with a passion. The only job to help me pay for school around here is at a nursing home. I basically clean up floors, beds, windows, ceilings, etc... when someone has a bowel movement over whichever object they choose to. It's killing my back, my self esteem, and my life.

I feel like hell bro, so I got you. I'm doing this all to finish college. It's depressing me very badly, but I know I can't give in.

This just feels good even talking about it. Just hang in there man.

Keep your head up, and remember when things seem that they can't get any worse, they can. You obviously have the smarts to make it, you just need to apply yourself. Do not worry about a car or living with your mom and pops. Rome was not built in a day, and your financial problems will not be fixed that quickly either.

I want you to step back and realize how lucky you are to have people in your corner, and you need to know how fortunate you are that your parents are willing to help you through these times. Now get off of your rump and show them how appreciative you are by working your *** off to make them proud.

College is not for every one. If you are not a good student it will be tough. If you are not passing your classes. Maybe you should think about trade. Or if that fails you could always work for Mac D's or be a IT, right BK. They make about the same! And damn BK change that Avatar. I can't stop looking at it. Also, Cell you are young and if you are thinking the way you are thinking. You are ahead of the game. It took me 25 to start thinking that way. Good luck, bro.

Indeed, I was a huge idiot until I graduated from college. Didn't take responsibility for anything, lazy, selfish, live-in-the-moment, etc.

From there it was almost like I flipped a switch. One day I just sorta "got it". It comes with growing up, maturing, going through really ****ty times, etc. Most people figure it out, you sound like a smart kid so I'm sure you'll figure it out too.

At least your parents are there for you and giving you another shot at a school in NY. Start fresh and make good on it. So you're 3 years behind now, if you get it together now, in 5 years that won't matter one bit.

Man you're still young. Maybe a change and living back with your parents will be a blessing in disguse. Just make sure this time you work hard. Nothing comes easy my friend.
