Anyone over 30 here taking college courses?

I'm 32 and just started taking college classes again. I graduated in 1999 with a BS of Science in Accounting, but just recently decided to pursue another profession. I'm enrolled in the Post-Bac Teaching Certification program at Marshall University. Since I already have a degree, this program enables me to take 8 courses to become certified to teach math and business classes in middle and high school.

Right now I'm enrolled in 2 courses, both online, which are going pretty good so far but I'm only 5 weeks in. I knew going back to college would be rough and it certainly has been since my wife and I both work 45-50 hours per week and have a 9 month old son at home. It's funny because when I went to college the first time, I had some people in my class that were in their 30's and 40's and they always talked about how hard it was going back to school after being out for so long. I always thought to myself that once I was done with college I would never go back, now here I am a student again. LOL

I'm 31 and starting in the fall I'll be taking classes at the University of Louisville. I'm looking foward to going back to school since I dropped out cause lack of money 11 years ago.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

Why are you getting out of Accounting?

Anyway, I went back for my MBA in finance when I turned 30. I thought it was easier this time around because I was more focused. We had a baby daughter during that time so it made for long days, working 50 hours a week, then dealing with the baby that never stopped crying until midnight, then studying. But still managed a 4.0. It just seemed easier when you focused on drinking and carousing and studied with a purpose.

I finished undergrad part time nights (worked days). I was about 30 when I got my bachelors.
I was 34 when I started law school, also nights while working full time. Graduated at 37. During those 4 years I got married, bought a house, got custody of my son from my first marraige, had my first child with my new wife and changed jobs.

I am bored with accounting and business jobs in general and I've finally decided to pursue something I've been wanting to do for years now. I've always thought of becoming a teacher and coaching high school basketball but never realized I could get a teaching certification so much quicker going this route. I always assumed that I would have to go 4 years and start over with classes and get a teaching degree. When I checked into it last year and found out I only need 8 classes, 4 of which are online, I decided to do it.

I worked in a public accounting firm for 6 years, then moved to an accounts payable position with an environmental lab for a few years, and now I'm working in the marketing department for a company that makes sample bottles for enviromental testing. I took the CPA exam once, not long after I graduated from college but didn't pass it. I had planned on taking it again and becoming a CPA but then I had a change of heart and wanted something different for a career.

I love teaching and working with kids. I've helped coach youth basketball and baseball teams for 8 years now and really enjoy it. I just think I would enjoy my profession much more if I were a teacher and coach. Not to mention you can't beat the hours and vacation time you get. I also would have much more time to spend with my wife and son, which is something I don't always get now, especially during tax time.

WOW!! Sounds like you were a busy busy man during that time. Congrats!! Looks like all that hard work paid off and things are going good for you now.
