I had the same thing happen to me...luckily before I went any further I read up on craigs list about scams and this is on of the main ones.

People can forge a cashiers check. You cash it, the money goes into the bank UNTIL a few weeks goes by and the bank determines the check is faulty. At that point, you are responsible for that money (if you spent it already your screwed). There is no recourse on your side.

Plus, the guy will tell you he's adding additional money so that you can ship the vehicle for him, but again, that money will come out of your pocket as well.

Just think to yourself: why would someone blindly buy my vehicle without ever seeing it in person.

BTW to the OP, it took me about 2 weeks to find a legit buyer on Craigslist.

A couple of years ago my wife's Aunt put up an ad on ebay to sell her dinner room table and chairs. Now we are in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and she got a response similar to OP. This guy was from Nigeria. Why the f*ck would a guy in Nigeria buy a table and chair set all the way from Canada off of ebay? LOL!

He had the same spiel. He was going to send a certified cheque with like $5000 extra included. He wanted her to deposit the cheque and send him back the extra $5000.

Sure buddy, we'll get right on that.

Knowing this is fraud, you should go ahead and just start messing around with the guy. Tell him to send you the check, then when you get it, tell him that the car was stolen or was in a serious accident and just keep stringing him along. Meanwhile, see if you can get a phone number and publicize it on Craigslist for a Personal add or something.

I've done that before, but with one of those Nigerian scammers.

According to "To Catch an ID Thief" Nigeria is the scamming headquarters of the world. Never buy from there.

I've never sold on CL before (only eBay), I figured he couldn't really do anything with the info he was asking for, and the info I gave would work for me to cash a check, but he wouldn't be able to use the info to hurt me because of address things and name things and such that work in my favor with my current living situation and the way my bank account is set up. But it still seems a little strange to me, but I may just be paranoid....what do y'all think?

It's a scam!! I got the exact same email from a guy when I listed a sofa and loveseat on there last month. He refused to give me a phone # or call me after numerous emails requesting both. When he asked me to give the mover his share of the money out of the cashier's check, I told him there was no way in hell I would be responsible for that and told him the deal was off. He emailed me 1 more time after that and I never responded to it. I haven't heard from him since.
