    1992 Olympics - Derek Redmon

Not sure how many people have seen this. The commercial is running on ESPN every now and then. Kinda a good fit since Father's Day just went by.

Redmon tore his hamstring on a corner. Got back up and decided to hobble the rest of the way. His father comes out of the stands and helps him finish the race. A nice story for those not familiar with it.

It really tugs at my heart strings when a person works so hard at something (like the Olympics) and has such a small window of hope in terms of how often it is vs. how long your body will let you do what you do (every 4 years, etc.), then have something unfortunate like that happen. You can tell by the look on the runner's face how disappointed he is. I couldn't imagine training my whole life for ONE moment, only to have something unpredictable and unfortunate like that happen.

I remember few things from the 90s. I don't even have to press play on that youtube because I remember that event vividly in my mind. I can't tell you who won that year but I can remember how he jumped off the line and after a few strides crumbled. Then his father came and helped him. One of the softest moments in sports I've ever seen.
