Re: OS'ers show me your pets!

hey guys. i found this guy in my backyard a while back..

    can anyone help me out.

for about a week he was eatting fruits and veggies i provided him and would hang out in the water... now all he wants to do is sleep. like 20 hours a day.

any info on what type he is would be great. I have no real water sources near me and i live in the desert so this seems rare. should I have left him out in my yard, to "die"? He seems so little and helpless

The last few times Ive woken up him, his eyes have been shut and kind of cloudy on the eyelids. Is this guy dieing?
or just getting ready for hibernation?

      Ruben...
He may need some mud or sand to burrow into.
I know the turtles in the lake and pond by me sun themselves for a while on some branches sticking out of the water(fallen trees) and then dive in and go under the mud.

I don't know what kind of turtle that is....but I'm sure if you left it out with no real water source...it would have been done already.
      At the very least...you tried.

that first picture is classic. She's got the look of "please, shut the kid up so I can sleep."

Good looking dog Knight, and the name and story that go along with her are awesome. And I know I've probably said this to you before, but reading that story has prompted me to say it again..

How's the turtle doing now man? First off, yeah it probably would have been better off if you left it alone if you don't know how to properly take care of it. To answer last question, I don't know. Turtles do hibernate in the fall, but it could be getting sick too.

Basically you gotta remember that it's a cold blooded animal. It needs sunlight (or another UV source, the bulbs are costly) regularly so that it can bask and keep it's temperature regulated. You'll have to clean it's enclosure pretty regularly too.

Like Knight said, you want to recreate a natural environment as close as possible, even if it means setting up something outside. Sand and mud to burrow in, and keep it's water clean.

Be careful with kids around, yourself too. Turtles can pass salmonella, so keep your hands nice and clean after handling.
                      PS: You guys are great.

Turtles can be kind of tough to take care of. They do hibernate but if they are kept in a warm enough place, they won't. I had a couple when i was younger and they never hibernated in 10 years or so. I didn't do anything special just an aquarium in my room. That one looks like some kind of a box turtle though and think they are a little more delicate than some other kinds.
