What is/was your greatest memory playing or coaching sports?

It can be anything from big plays you made, to big games your team won, to a team that you earned a spot on, to anything related to sports and you. I'll start with a few that will not be leaving my mind anytime soon.

    1. The hit

I was always a football fan, I swear from the time I was born I was a fan of the game. I can remember the start of 7th grade year when I finally got my chance to suit up. Fast forward 2 years later and have me playing JV. I'll never forget the beginning of this game. We were at home playing a team far West from us. I was lined up as the left gunner on kickoffs and it was my job to fly down the field and make sure nothing got outside. Well, something did get outside, just not on my side.

I remember seeing the returner field the ball and tear off down the opposite sideline. I made a cut back and took off straight across the field as fast as I could go. He at this point had already gotten in front of our entire team and was headed for the promised land. I can't stress this next part enough. I was blessed with the perfect angle and perfect luck - He was never paying attention.

I was slightly ahead of him coming down the field, while his eyes just kept looking forward like if I wasn't even there. Needless to say I hit him as absolutely hard as I could with a full head of steam and I still remember the scene. The coolest part was that it was right in front of our bench, coaches and fans. He was right on the sideline and when I hit him he fumbled (out of bounds) and just rolled. He rolled right by the bleachers and onto our track that circled the field. I'll never forget the look I had from our head coach. It was just a mouth wide open "Are you devil?" type of look if I've ever seen one. He congratulated me at half time, which was odd because he never gave out praises very often. To this day my old teammates and family members refer to is only as "The hit."

    2. Sack Attack

This also takes place in 9th grade. We only played 9 man football at that time, and on defense we ran our version of a 4-6 bear. It was a 5-3-1 formation that was quite similar.

Anyways, I was not really big enough to play on the D-line (about 5'7 155 in 9th grade) but I just excelled at DT. The reason was because I was so quick off the snap that I 90% of the time would be by the center before he stood up and usually before the QB could hand the ball off. It was like a glitch. I'm not trying to be arrogant, but I can't stress how much this worked. I had mastered this as a skill, and it was unstoppable.

So when we ran this formation I always went to the DT spot, and in this particular game I ended up 8 sacks. 8. Freakin. Sacks. 3 were from actually sacking the QB trying to pass, and the other 5 were hitting him before he handed the ball off. It was like a cheat code. That was just my day I guess. I did OK offensively that game, but 8 sacks and no answer for them still holds a special place in my sports heart. Even if it did feel like cheating.

    3. Making the team

In 7th grade my family moved from a town of about 1,200 people to one of about 60,000 people. I was already nervous just to play ball with the "big city kids." More nervous than you would know.

To make a long story short, for the first time in my sports career I had to try out for a team. An actual real tryout.

They timed our base running speed, tested our arm strength, made us do some fielding and hitting drills, and some other things I can't remember. All I remember was wanting to be one of youngest kids to make legion ball that year. They started to read off the names after our 3rd try out, and they started to near the list as I sat waiting, sweating. Finally they called my name. I couldn't help but just smile. I had made a "big city" team.

Before we had a t-shirt with our sponsors name on it in the small town, and now we had 4 different uniform combinations, our own locker, own hat, etc... Plus we played on a field that a semi pro team I used to watch played on. I can honestly say I felt like I made the big leagues.

I ended up as the only 14 year old on the team, but I played sub par. I was used to taking farm boys deep and just letting it all come natural, but my poor play (mixed with excitement and the introduction of good curveballs) didn't stop me from enjoying every second of my run.

    =============================================

I'll post some more I've got in mind later. Let's hear some of your guys. I know some of you played major ball, I would love to hear your stories.

I've played a lot of basketball, and have quite a few shots to force overtimes, ect.
One recent thing that stands out was last basketball season making a half court shot at the end of the 1st half of my jv game. I was on the right side of the half court line and banked it.

Re: What is/was your greatest memory playing or coaching sports?

My last appearance is college is one of my top. I pitched and got shelled in our conference tournament to get knocked out of the tournament and possibly end our season. Luckily though, we got an "At-Large" birth to the regional tournament. We swept through the tournament in three games, but because of my bad outing, I was demoted from the #2 pitcher to the #3 or #4 pitcher.

So we made it to the national tournament (Div II tourney in Montgomery, AL). We lost the first game and won the second. In game three our coach decided to go with the other guy instead of me because he had pitched decent in the regional tournament. By then, it had been about two weeks since I pitched and I was a little frustrated, but just hungry to pitch. I pitched every week for the last two years, so it was just weird.

I was to throw game 4 if we won game three.

Our starter didn't have it and gave up 1 in the first and 4 in the second. I was told to warm up and was brought in the game with us down 5-0 to start the 3rd.

It was weird though, I had a completely different attitude. Usually I was very calm and collected when I pitched. I never showed emotion, good or bad, and just did my thing and ran off the mound at the end of innings. But for some reason this game, I had some extra fire (in my attitude and in my arm). I shut the door in the top of the 3rd and we put up a 3-spot in the bottom half. I had more fun in that game, then I probably had my own career. While I always loved and enjoyed baseball, when I was pitching in a game, I was always serious and never just enjoyed the moment.

But in this game, it was different, I had a blast. I was talking a little trash, staring down hitters, pumping my fists after big plays. I even tried to instegate a guy who stared me down after I hit him. I piched very well that game and held the other team scoreless, until I was replaced with 2 out in the 9th ( I ran out of gas, I guess). Needless to say, we couldn't muster any more runs and lost 5-3 .The game ended our season ...and my career. But looking back, it's a game I will always remember and sometimes wish I had played my whole career with that sort of edge I had that game.

Re: What is/was your greatest memory playing or coaching sports?

I have four from High School lacrosse...

One was a hat trick in the first half on senior night which was pretty special.

The second was in a preseason tourney against our biggest rival. We we're down one with 30 seconds left, they were milking it when one of our D-poles nailed their attackmen with the ball, I picked it up cut upfield passed everyone, fast break set up perfectly dished to top left, they went bottom left, goal with 2 seconds left. It was unreal. We ended up winning in OT.

The third was against another one of our rivals, back when I played attack. We were a man down and ended up having the ball. I got the pass and decided to cut to the cage, broke through all three of their defenders and scored one handed stick side on the goalie. Goalie lost it and started yelling at his d-pole for letting me through... and punched him in the face and got ejected, it was really bizarre because they still had the lead.

The fourth was a hit. We were playing one of the best teams in the state, losing 10-3 late in the fourth. I got moved to mid fielder my senior year and my line was in late. The goalie was trying to clear the ball and I was at mid field when I saw one of their middies break up the left side and the goalie saw it. I took a big circle to meet up quarter way up the left side just as the goalie fired him the clearing pass. Timing was perfect... Pass went high and outside so he had to jump up and look back just as i was coming full speed into his chest... clean hit, I absolutely destroyed the kid. I had some other good hits, but that one was the best.

My greatest set of memories are the 3 years I spent coaching wrestling along with my dad.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

                    Basketball moments for me:

                    1) I think it was in 1995. We played 3on3 and a great player guarded me. He's 6'4 and has extremely long hands and great skills. I went up from the left side of the rim, did an up-and-under move and was ready to score from the right side of the rim. I was in the air and about to release the ball but he fouled me, so the ball went in and out. But it was great, I've never done that before, it was just an reflex or something, but I felt what gliding means...

2)Another one was I think also in the 90's when I played 1on1 against a friend and I went up from the left side of the rim, he jumped to try to block it but I kinda turned in the air - so I'm now with my back to him, did a little pump - while he was starting to go down, and released the ball for the nice basket.
                    My Specs:

                    ZX Spectrum

College Baseball, 2 out bases loaded and we were up one in the last inning. Im playing 3rd. Shot hit down the line and I dive snagging it at full extension. Come up to my knees and throw a strike to 1st to get the runner by a step to win the game.

My last at bat in organized baseball (summer team) hit a 400ft+ HR to dead center, off a kid who had been drafted.
