    Best pizza place?

Sitting here eating some Papa Johns pizza for dinner, and I was wondering what all of you think is the best pizza place. Is it Pizza Hut? Papa Johns? Some local place?

Yeah, we have a family owned pizza joint here in Portland called Amalfi's that is better then any other pizza Ive ever had, the crust is better and the sauce they use is far better.

Local Mom and Pop places... absolutely no question.

My favorite is one in Pittsburgh called Mineo's Pizza House. Great stuff.

Seriously, if someone picks a chain pizza joint over a mom and pop joint, they need to be strangled on the spot.

How do you think chains become chains? They're not all corporate "experiments"; many of them were in fact family owned operations that were so good and so popular that they could afford to open multiple units, so on and so forth, until they were, ta-da, a national or state-wide chain.

Good recipe + quality ingredients = good pizza.

Mom & pop joints don't have a monopoly on that equation, nor are they immune from sucking.

The best I've had was from Aurelio's, a small chain based in Chicago.

The thing is a typical Mom and Pop pizza shop will usuallly have very few restaurants... maybe one or two or three. What this translates into is FRESHER ingrediants. Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, etc. are just massed produced pizzas made from the ingredients that they get the best deal on. A Mom and Pop place can afford to get fresher, more expensive ingredients. They can take more time perfecting the recipe and making a good pizza because it's not all about commercials and getting the most pizza to the most pizza in whatever way they can. It's about appealing to the local audience that already enjoys the pizza.

I did a 3000 word article on it last semester... it's a subject that greatly interests me.

I like a few places in the Lansing area, but if I am going for a chain, I'll choose Hungry Howie's. I love the crust. Plus you can get a pizza there for 5.99, try doing that at a local place. Sometimes I want cheap and easy.

Yeah, that's a good point. My comment was more based on the fact that there's no shame in liking Hungry Howies or Jets, or even Pizza Hut, in that they are, by and large, still working with quality recipes and ingredients, good cooking techniques, etc.

I've had plenty of bad pizza from small joints, and with, what, 500 places around here I'm not about to try them all looking for the good ones when Jets and HH's get the job done just fine.
