Problem with Mice

No, not the electronic kind...

So the story is as follows. Im down is AUS for schooling and found a very nice $1.7M home my girlfriend and I rent. We rent the only room on the main floor, and our 3 our house mates live on the top floor. Right behind our place is a river.

Anyways, a few weeks back a mouse got into the house. We tried poison and everything but the little guy was too smart to take it. He was actually very smart, escaping from a box I used to catch him and avoiding going outside when we purposely left the door open. He was a good sneak.

So yesterday we got home from Melbourne (he parents are visiting) and our house mate said they found the mouse dead. This morning, however, I went to the washroom and lying down, I heard the guy. After searching for an hour, we finally found him and I killed him with my shoe.

I dont think my house mates did find the other one dead, but maybe they did and there are a few coming in. It's a gated golf community and there's no reason for mice to be coming into such a clean home. He goes into our room all the time and we've found him in our food in the kitchen.

Anyone ever have such issues? What can we do to ensure he never comes back. I dont want to have to call a professional.

I would first cover up any openings with some small mesh metal wire/fencing. Once that is done, I would also place either moth balls or pepper near the openings. The moth balls will take care of basically all bugs/rodents but do smell.

Cleanliness has nothing to do with having mice. They are scavengers and they will go anywhere there is a food source. I would recommend calling a pest control professional if your previous efforts didn't work. The cost will be worth having a rodent free home.

Rat poison, rat poison, and more rat poison. We had about 15 mice we caught last year. Got an exterminator in here this time and we havent had a single problem so far.

It's from The Simpsons actually... the episode where Bart hangs out with Nelson and accidentally kills a mother bird. "Bart the Mother" is the title. I butchered it a little bit.. here's the actual dialog:

Skinner: Well, I was wrong. The lizards are a godsend.
Lisa: But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're
overrun by lizards?
Skinner: No problem. We simply release wave after wave of Chinese
needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.

Dude, that is my cat pictured above!

My wife and I have a problem with mice in our home, and it sucks. We live close to a sugarcane field, and they come into our house to get warm in the winter. Mice are pretty resilient and I've had a few chew off their arms to get away, but nothing like I saw today.

I set a trap with peanut butter, and I caught two of them this morning. The thing is one of them was completely intact, while the other one was missing it's whole front end except the spinal column. It looked like it had been sucked right off of the spinal column. Can mice do this? I know they do some wild things to get out of a trap, but can they survive pulling their bodies off of their spinal column (even just a minute), should I be worried about a snake in the house, or could it be other mice? My cat is not allowed in my laundry room (scene of the death and disappearance). Please share your thoughts.
