It really is a great place to live. You have the river, brookside, historic downtown. It's great, imagine Dallas, but 1/4th the size. It's big enough to not feel like a small town at all, but to not feel to huge.
Plus, we're getting this piece of art.

You can make an allright living there... but if you move there with money you've earned elsewhere in the Midwest... you won't believe how quickly it'll disappear.

Re: Big cities - What's the catch?
The allure of a big city has already past me by. I never lived in NYC or Boston but my family is from western Long Island I spent a ton of time in NYC as a kid plus going to college just outside of Boston I've seen enough. Plus I lived in New Haven for two years after college and enough was enough.
I'd much rather have space, peace & quiet, green grass and a lack of traffic/congestion (although there's still plenty of that in CT). I also NEED a pool, hehe.
As for advice, like they said be careful when finding an apartment - make sure it's in a good area. I lived right on the border of a terrible section of New Haven and had all kinds of fun experiences - one night my roommate's car was broken into and another night a young kid rang my doorbell around 9pm and when I answered it he pulled up his shirt showing me he'd just gotten stabbed. He wanted to come in and "use the phone", yyyyyyyeah okay.
The cost of living I'd imagine will go up tremendously regardless of what city you move in to - I find it hilarious that you think $450/mo is a lot for an apartment. I guess my buddy who pays $1400/mo in Manhattan wouldn't be looking for you as a roommate.Even in lowly New Haven I was paying close to $700 after utilities.
A big thing is that a lot of people I know who live in NYC and Boston do not own cars, it's just mass transit for them. Combine a car payment, auto insurance and gas and that puts quite a bit of money back in your pocket which will typically go towards a more expensive rent."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Re: Big cities - What's the catch?
I appreciate the advice guys, but I don't think some of you understand why I am looking into making a move.
I love North Dakota and I love my small town. I would love to stay here, but... You can't make a living in these small towns unless you A. Farm B. Work construction. C. Own the right business or D. Work at the nursing home E. Drive semi
I have intentions of doing any of the above (maybe the business idea, but I don't have the funds) so I can't really stay in my town and accomplish what I want. If I move North to Bismarck I am in a world of hurt because they have such an enormous cost of living and yet such a terrible, terrible pay scale for seemingly everything. It's like I said - our bigger cities charge the same to live there as places like Vegas, but they pay you like my small town does.
I don't know if wherever I move will be permanent or not, but I NEED to start a career, start a life for myself. I just don't see myself being able to do that in ND.I post the frog

Well, first you should probably actually read all of the responses in the thread you created to understand why I said that. Then, get a sense of humor.PSN: JISTIC_OS

I lived in a Rural area in Ohio for most of my life. My car insurance did go up when i moved to Dayton, Ohio.
But then again, Dayton has like the second highest rate of Grand Theft Auto in the state.
Just another thing to think about.Comment

I just can't bring myself to put on a Cubs lid so I have to go with the south siders. At least I will have a crew to protect me if I get jumped by some homeboys in blue pinstripes.Comment
