Wow...Mine were like $400, and that covered sports intramurals, other crap. We had unofficial "party dues" as well, but those were only 120 or something. 2200 a semester is sorority type money, that's nuts.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

WOW! That's insane if that indeed is per person. Though to say, my fraternity while a national one, was rather small (nation wide).Comment

Do or did you guys have a house at all? At my school, fraternities and sororities were not allowed at all to have a "house" -- like you would commonly see at other schools. Rather, ours usually was based on about 6 brothers living together in a rented house.
I just have to ask this question though -- if any of you have the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority on your campuses, do the fraternities call them by "another name"?

Our school was the same way.
As far as the dues go, it was $600 to join and then our yearly undergrad dues were between $75-$85/year if I remember correctly.F-L-O-R-I-D-A! S-T-A-T-E! Florida State! Florida State! Florida State! Wooooo!Comment

yep we have a house that all the brothers live in, I think all the fraternities do here. Quite a few got new ones that were built to house athletes in 96 and a couple got a whole bunch of money to build new ones when TBS needed the land they were on for something.Do or did you guys have a house at all? Yeah its per person if you don't live in the house. If you do, its an extra $750 per semester. Our national dues are $250 per person every semester alone. Some houses on campus are between $3,500-$4,000 per semester. So we're cheap compared to them lol.Twitter

Re: Fraternities...You In One?...Know About Them...? Need some opinions.
Black Frats typically engage in branding, which I wouldn't consider my cup of tea. You should see what your potential frats policy is on that.
$2200/semester certainly qualifies for the buying your friends stereotype that follows frats around.
Maybe Colorado has bad frats, but they have an awful reputation here, and I would rather fight a frat boy that join one. The ones on the campus at the University of Denver are notorious for Date Rape, and one of them was shut down for bad behavior.
There are frats out there that prize academic accomplishment, you'd do yourself a favor by finding one of those if you are hellbent on joining.
And as far as the knocking frats because you can't join them:
A)Neither of my colleges had a Greek system
B)My friend was raped at a DU frat, which means that there was going to be a 0% chance of me ever thinking about pledging if I went to a college with a greek system.Comment

I'm not denying that there are a ton of slimeball frats out there, but just wondering if you'd stop going to house parties when a friend was raped at one of those? Just sayin', in college I knew a friend raped at some random house party on campus...Black Frats typically engage in branding, which I wouldn't consider my cup of tea. I know where you're coming from though, and that's why I personally try and disassociate myself with the type of frats you refer to.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

True. There are good and bad people everywhere in all walks of life. The key is being able to identify each and then choosing your associations wisely...
And Tmagic, any fraternity (or any other group/team/etc) that requires taking a beating to gain initiation or acceptance is not something you or anyone else should consider being a part of. I'm sorry if my paddling example gave you the wrong impression, but in no way do I advocate hazing in that form. In fact, most of the stuff you listed I would not condone.
In theory, pledging (or new member education as the PC types want to call it) should be primarily focused on teaching the principles of the organization and conveying what will be expected once an active brother (or sister).Comment

I have no idea what goes on in frats. I guess you just pay for a group of friends. Good way to meet people if you don't know anyone at the school.
Notre Dame does not have fraternities.Comment
