Panhandler shoots man who says "Get a Job"

Stay informed. Get the latest Modesto, Stockton and Sacramento news and weather from the KCRA news team.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A bus stop panhandler shot a man who turned down her request for money, Sacramento police said. The shooting took place at 3:45 p.m. Monday at 6th and J.Several people turned her down, police said, and she shot the last man who did so.

There was some sort of conversation between the man and the woman, Sgt. Matt Young said.A witness told KCRA 3 that the man first told the panhandler "no," and then said, "get a job."The 54-year-old victim was shot once in the stomach and taken to the UC Davis Medical Center for surgery. The woman tried to fire twice but was unsuccessful, police said. She aimed the second time at the man's head and pulled the trigger but the gun malfunctioned, a witness told KCRA 3.

The suspect then got onto a bus a few blocks away and left the area, Regional Transit officials said. She was detained before 5 p.m. and taken into custody after being questioned in a Target store parking lot at Broadway and Riverside. Police said she had a gun in her purse.

Some users of the city's public transit said they are thinking about changing their routine."It's actually kind of worrisome to me because every day you see someone out here asking for money," said light rail user Derik Jones. The woman was taken to the Sacramento County Jail.

Well see the panhandler took the wrong path here. She should've taken the gun to a pawn shop and gotten bigger bucks.

Toronto has a bit of a panhandler problem (though not as bad as before) I heard a story on the radio of some guy who was asked for money by some guy who said he lost his bus money. Well, a week later the same guy was met by the SAME panhandler who asked for money AGAIN! This time the guy grabbed the panhandler and told him he was the same guy from last week and that he wants his money back. The panhandler opened his coat and gave the guy back his money....here's the kicker though, the panhandler had at least a thoussand dollars in bills in his pockets!

Sure they make bank. I saw one panhandler trying to get money on the side of a street. He was there all day. Then I saw him later that night hop in a BMW and leave. Yep, a BMW.

Matt's safety tip of the day...

Many homeless people choose this life. They are addicts of some sort of vice or are mentally unstable.

Also many homeless carry weapons to protect them from other homeless. I've seen everything you can think of...many of them crudely made, but they can still ruin your day just as fast as a knife or gun.

Provoking them is not recommended. Giving them money is really not recommended either. It's best just to say as little as you can and keep going.

There are quite a few panhandlers who are just regular people with regular jobs (sometimes even great jobs) who want to make some extra money on their time off. It's actually not uncommon at all.

Yeah, but no way he made that panhandling. I remember seeing a show about it, and it's a really on-off try your luck kind of thing. I think they said even if you did really well, the best of them still only come away with something like 30k a year. Which is certainly not bad - but not that great either. You probably just saw one of those guys who has a pretty good job, and then spends his off-time begging. Like I said above, it's really not uncommon at all.

                      Haha, man that isn't good.

The first time I ever met a homeless person I was so intimidated and guilt stricken that I gave in to them. I ponied up 5 dollars and then you wouldn't believe the swarm that came at me!

There were homeless people crowding me like you wouldn't believe! This was at a bus stop in Los Angeles by the way.

It felt like the thing to do at the time, but I HAD to say no after that. I couldn't afford to feed LA!

Anyways, I felt like a movie star for a bit
