    Any recommended sleep meds?

I just have trouble getting to sleep when I want to or need to. There are times throughout the day that I'm just dead tired because I only got like two hours of sleep the night before, so I try to get a couple hours nap... I end up just laying there, awake, with my eyes closed for a good 100 minutes and I'm still tired (obviously), and it just pisses me off.

Not only that, but I only get about 6 hours a night. My body doesn't seem to want to sleep more than that, until later in the day, it says, "Reminder: You didn't get your eight hours yet. Initiating tiredness." So sometimes I actually do fall asleep for my naps, but other times I don't.

I just saw a commercial for Sleep M.D., some drug-free med they cell at things like CVS Pharmacy and such. Are these legit, and... dare I say addiction free? I just want to sort of "test" it out, and see what kind of things this does. Is this like Benadryl where it helps you conk out, or are these things more designed to keep you in R.E.M. for a while so you sleep longer?

    Thanks for any feedback.

I have struggled with this at times myself. You have to try and get some type of routine. I try to get at least 8 hours of sleep if not more. At the very least try to sleep late on the days when you do not have to work or go to school. on the weekends I make sure to get plenty of sleep. Usually a good 8-10 hours each day on the weekend a 2 hour nap each day as well.

I am deathly afraid of taking sleep medication as they can be habit forming.

I would love to, but here's my school schedule:

I also have baseball on Sunday mornings, but it actually rained here last night so it's canceled today. Anyway, my best shots are Sunday and Thursday nights, but I simply can't lull myself to sleep early and not wake up early, not tired but wanting to sleep. Like I said, it's like 6 hours and that's it. This started happening a few years ago, and I'm actually not sure why.

Yeah, so I'm afraid of taking something where it becomes habitual, like you said.

          Re: Any recommended sleep meds?

Products like Sleep M.D. are what we in the pharmaceutical world call a neutraceutical; essentially selling a natural ingredient as a pharmaceutical. The problem with these is that any statement or claim made by the company is not evaluated (therefore not confirmed or denied) by the FDA.

As for sleep M.D itself, the "active ingredient" is melatonin. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone in the body and it does contain a role in sleep. From what I have read, melatonin has been used in several studies for insomnia and has shown to help in some cases. However, does that mean sleep M.D. will work???? There are also some drawbacks to melatonin as a pharmaceutical. it is difficult to use therapeutically because it tends to have poor bioavailability and a short half life (sleep M.D. claims to have a time-release system which can help with the short half life problem). There is no way to know if the delivery system of sleep M.D. works as well as it says it does without some 3rd party double blind studied (ala FDA studies).

As for other alternatives, over the counter sleep meds usually will contain diphenhydramine. This is not habit forming, but may not work as well as some prescription drugs. There are several prescription drugs that can be prescribed for insomnia, usually benzodiazepines or hypnotic agents. Both share some potential for abuse and dependence, however they are usually safe when taken exactly as directed.

Sorry for the long answer. Once I get started I guess I just write a small paper. BTW, I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Toledo in Pharmaceutical Sciences, hope that helps.

Madden09 does it for me! Sorry, couldn't resist. But seriously, I'm a fan of Simply Sleep. My wife uses Ambien CR but it is really important to get 8 hours with it. Brian

Ambien made me hallucinate like crazy. Being in California you could likely get a prescription for Marijuana to help fall asleep.

                STOP TAKING NAPS

It doesn't matter how ****ing tired you are, if you want to go to sleep at night, don't sleep during the day.

If you stop napping, you should be fine. Get a regular sleep cycle, then go buy some Sudafed and pop 2 an hour before you need to wake up in the morning.

Good advice on the naps. Pop benadryl, not sudafed. Sudafed is a stimulant.

That must suck to not be able to go to sleep when you want. As soon as I close my eyes for a few seconds I'm out lol. Screw the drugs though, you'll get it worked out after a while.

Actually, I am fine getting to sleep at night when I'm actually tired to, but it's that during the day time, those naps, that I need.

Let me try and re-say what I was saying before: It doesn't seem to matter how tired I am or how little sleep I get the night before... if I go to bed the next night, I just can't fulfill at least 8 hours of sleep. My body just doesn't want to sleep that long at night, it only gives me like 6 hours max, and I don't know why. Then it gives me that "You need to fulfill two more hours" mode later in the day, which is why I nap. But there have just been some nap times when I didn't really hit the pillow right and I just laid there. If I didn't nap, I still would only get 6 hours the next night, if that makes sense.

Thanks for the response, GoToledo. I'm thinking maybe I should avoid any drugs right now because I have a physical this week, but I may try something later (with my mom's consent).
