Chicagoans/Blackhawk fans - need some advice

I'm going to be in Chicago for work this week and am thinking about going to the Blackhawks game on Wednesday night (forget who they are playing).
Should I get my ticket ahead of time or will I be able to walk right up and get one? How expensive are scalpers?
I'm staying downtown (across from Hancock building), so should I take public transit to get there and back or would it be better (i.e safer) to take a cab?

I would guess tickets would be available either by ticketmaster or walk up.

A cab from the Hancock is a bit of a ride (but safer), I think the Blue Line stops right outside the UC, but its a few blocks to walk. If you google the United Center you can see approximatley how far. You would be going from the middle of the expressway (290/Eisenhower) and walking up Damen

Safer? How so, these cab drivers will scare the hell outta you.

Just because the UC is out west doesn't mean that people over there are gonna do anything to you.

Plus, its Chicago, its safe anytime before 11pm.

Exactly, the area surrounding the United Center has really cleaned up nice...beautiful buildings, nice shops, and some good lookin women...definitely not a bad neighboorhood anymore...the further west you go though, thats where it can get a little dicey.

BTW boomhauer, Ill be at that game...my first one of the season, I cant wait.

Thanks for the tips guys. Whether I go will depend on when the conference I'm attending lets out.

worked a block from the UC at the James Jordan boys and girls club and the walk isnt that bad at all. If you go further west than the library on Madison keep your head on a swivel. J/p

A few years back I was going down Madison (turn off of Western Avenue) to get some Blackhawks tickets. I saw a women taking a dump on the sidewalk. She had toilet paper in hand. I kid you not.
