Visting Europe For The First Time

I will be going over to Europe for the first time on Monday for my work. I will be in Belgium and also in the Netherlands. As it appears right now I will quite possibly have Saturday for some sightseeing. That day I will be in Brussels. Are there any recommendations for places to go check out on my day of sightseeing? I don't know when/if I would be going back so I want to make the most of it. A coworker was telling me that all the countries being packed close together in Europe that it is easy to get around to see other countries if you so desire so I am not opposed to going somewhere besides Brussels if there is something cool to go check out. I don't know if there are any nearby but seeing some old castles would be pretty neat.

Any recommendations on things to do would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Edit: I forgot to mention it is unlikely that I will have access to a car on my sightseeing day.

I studied abroad in europe this summer and went to a mcdonalds in each of the ten cities we went to. Pretty much the same stuff, except the 10 nuggets, large fries, and large drink you can get here for six bucks turns into 6 nuggets, small fries, and small drink for eight bucks.

My recommendation is that you go to Prague. By far the coolest city. Avoid italy, its completely overrated and just dirty. Paris and Amsterdam are always fun as well.

Can't you guys stay away from McDonald's for few days? It's like going abroad and spending the entire time at the US embassy...! Why not going to a local restaurant and try out the local food?

I'm a Research and Development Chemist for a company that makes coolant additives for scale and corrosion inhibition. One of our blenders is in the Netherlands so I'm going over there to audit production.

My work should be done by the weekend so that I have Saturday to do what I want so I'm just looking for something that would be really cool to do over there since I don't know when/if I'll go back there in future.

That is one of the things I'm looking forward to...trying food that I wouldn't normally be able to eat.

Belgium is known for its beer and chocolate. So have fun. Any local Belgian beer will basically blow your socks off. Nothing better than a Trappist beer, some mussels swimming in garlic/shallots/butter/white wine, pommes frites, and some crusty bread to sop it all up. I love Belgium.

If you end up in Amsterdam, I have lots of tips for that city. Only spent a short time in Belgium (Antwerp), but it's definitely a place I want to return to.

I've heard that Europeans don't really like Americans.

Heh, basically. I know the city very well regardless, but most of my advice is coffeeshop-centric. Good times.

Fishepa, at least in Amsterdam, the British were the most hated because they're the most common and tend to be loud and cause trouble. French are #2 because the Dutch think they're stuck up and rude (basically the same attitude we have towards the French). Americans were definitely on somewhat of a **** list (tourists in general, but especially American and British tourists tend to cause trouble, get too high for their own good, get into fights, etc.), but I didn't feel any animosity at all from the people there. I was there in the winters of 2004 and 2005, when anti-American sentiment about the Iraq War and everything else was at a high, so if anything, it would be calmed down and even more welcoming in 2008. Love that city.
