Boy, 8, Dies After Accidentally Shooting Himself With Uzi

WESTFIELD, Mass. – An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.

The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club, Police Lt. Lawrence Valliere said.

The boy was with a certified instructor and "was shooting the weapon down range when the force of the weapon made it travel up and back toward his head, where he suffered the injury," a police statement said. Police called it a "self-inflicted accidental shooting."

The victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he died. His name was not released.

Although the death appears to be an accident, police and the Hampden district attorney's office were investigating, officials said.

The club said on its Web site that the event, run in conjunction with C.O.P Firearms and Training, is "all legal and fun." People will be allowed to fire weapons at vehicles, pumpkins and other targets, it said.

Officials with the private club and the firearms group could not be reached for comment. A message left on a club answering machine was not returned. The C.O.P. group's machine clicked off without taking a message.

The sportsman's club was founded in 1949 and describes itself on its Web site as an organization that promotes "the interest of legal sport with rod, gun, and bow and arrow, both directly and through training."

It has eight firing ranges as well as archery and fishing facilities located on 375 acres in Westfield, about 100 miles west of Boston

Who's bright idea was it to let an 8 year old try to handle an uzi?

    ...Wow, that's sad.

That being said, who's brilliant idea was it to let a damn 8 year old child shoot a freaking Uzi? That's some brilliant parenting.

I can see the anger that will come out of all this and though I'm not this huge NRA type guy, I feel that an American should have the right to own a firearm (so long as it's legal and they are using it for game).

There are kids younger than 8 holding automatic weapons without a doubt in my mind. If this sort of thing has been going on since 1949, then it's obviously been safe and has done very well.

I know, the kid is 8 and yea, a part of me does want to agree that he shouldn't be holding a gun, but accidents happen and I'll file this under the list. Like I said, there are likely kids younger than him that could train adults on how to use a firearm.

Too much will be made of the kid's age instead of just focusing on what can be done next year to ensure that nothing like this happens again to a kid or an adult.

8 y/o with a gun? What's going on?! And with Uzi? As far as I know Uzi is known as the least safe weapon ever made. And why didn't they wait until he's 10? (yeah, yeah, sarcasm)

Wow thats sad. I remember my first time shooting a gun at a firing range. I as probably like 12-14 years old. The kickback scared the **** out of me.

Its weird how this happened though. I mean whoever was watching him must of realized he could not control the gun before this.

Nobody can be directly blamed for this, but I think some people need to overlook the decisions they made.

Awhile back I saw a video of a guy who shot himself in the arm when the fully automatic pistol rode up and left right into his arm.

Not sure why you'd still allow a kid of all people to fire a fully automatic, and I'm sure he held it just like a pistol since there was no butt like a rifle has

I'll never fully understand the American penchant for wanting to own and carry around guns especially automatic weapons. That being said, even if I were a type to do this kind of thing I definitely wouldn't let an 8 year old firing an uzi of all things.
