I Hate My New Manager

So the manager I had since I worked were I do has recently left and moved on to another store. The guy they sent in to us has no experience what so ever in cell phone sales. E've worked here for almost a year and a half and have the most seniority in the store. The problem here is I feel I am going to have to help him and the people around me (Everyone here is less than three months employed). I don't feel that is my job or responsibility. He also feels the need to deligate the responsibility of inventory for the store onto everyone that works there. Having everyone alternate Monday's to come in and help him with it. Again, something I don't feel I should have to do. No other store in the company has this rule.

I kinda feel like asking for a promotion to Asst. Manager and a raise. I just don't want to piss anyone off and risk my job. I mean I have done a good job here ( I'm 3rd in GP, 3rd in commission and 4th in sales).

What do you guys think? How should I approach this?

I would definitely ask for a raise if you are going to have to do that stuff. Problem would be who do you talk to about it. I would think the new manager would have a say in who gets promoted at his store. You could obviously go over his head and tell the regional(or whoever it is) manager about what is happening and how you are having to do things above your position and pay. Problem is though you could piss of your manager.

The company doesn't really give raises because its commission based plus an hourly wage. So its rare, they do do it though. I just don't want to get in trouble by anyone. I feel I deserve it.

I wouild imagine if you help this manager get through his initial stage, he will see your value and the promotion will happen naturally. Now is really not the time to have have an attitude that this or that isn't your job. You should take on all of these responsibilities and present them at your next review.

This is a common problem in almost all industries, especially retail because there is typically high turnover. I worked retail for about 3 or 4 years (Junior year of high school through sophomore year in college) and during that time, I probably changed managers 4 or 5 times and assistant managers 7 or 8 times.

One problem I notice is that every manager has their own style and once you get used to one, it can be hard to adapt or even accept another. Change itself, is often hard to accept, so when your used to doing things one way and are forced to change, you are going to hate it whether or not it's better or worse.

I'm not saying this is how you are, this is just what I have experienced.

I say let things run it's course, help the new guy out as much as possible and then see what happens. When review time comes up, bring up to your manager or district manager how much you helped out with the transition and that by doing so you think you have earned an AM spot or are ready to take on AM responsiblitiles.

Butting head with your boss rarely can be a good thing. He has more power to you, so if he see's you as a challenge, he can do his best to have you terminated or relocated...and on your side, it's no fun to come to work everyday with a hatered for the peopel your work for. Make the best out of it, help him out and good things will eventually happen.

That would be good device, but the company I work for doesn't do reviews. You make the same amount of money unless you become an asst. manager, manager or go to corporate. So if I don't speak up nothing will ever come from it.

Who determines who becomes assistant manager?

Either way, your job satisfaction level is going to boil down to who you work with, not necessarily what you do. If you decided you hate this manager, you'll have a long miserable road ahead. Just keep an open mind and do what it takes to be awarded Assistant Manager. I find it odd that a company wouldn't give reviews. They can't keep that hourly rate the same forever, doesn't make sense. Just do what is asked and then when you feel comfortable with the new Manager, talk to him about the promotion. Going around your boss is pretty much suicide.

Not that I don't like Dwight, but I couldn't stand him as a Manager.

Give the new manager two weeks. Sure he's going to have some things you don't like initially. I've never had a new manager that didn't do something I didn't agree with.

I think that you'll find that after two weeks the things that he asks really aren't that difficult to accomplish, and that the job isn't nearly as bad as you think...

Just speaking from past experience.

I'm kinda in the same boat in a different way though. I have come up with different ideas to help things run better and my Boss took them and made them Her own...BTW-She doesn't have a clue in most cases. Nice. Of course, no kudo points for little ole' me. It pissed me off at first, but I look at this way- It's not the only job in the world and if I find something better, My time where I'm at and things I did would go down as experience on my resume' which I could back up with actions, not just a line of bs.
In other words, they are using me to make themselves better, So I'm using them to learn all I can in areas where I could benefit, and then make my life better for it. This probably isn't the answer the OP is looking for. Just another way of looking at things.

Only thing is Inventory is a manager's job, and he wants us to help him. He gets paid more to do inventory, I don't.
