I believe I severely damaged my ear

Before I go into details, I would like to add that I know I made a mistake and that I should have known better. Basically, I pretty much got what was coming to me.

Anyways, I purchased a Springfield .45 2 days ago. I went out to fire a couple rounds off out of town a bit not too long after I bought it. I knew I should have ear plugs, but I just neglected them thinking I would be fine.

8 rounds later I had enough.

For the last 36 hours I have had constant ringing in my left ear, and everything sounds muffled. The right one used to be like that, but it quit a few hours after firing. The left one just doesn't seem to be getting any better. I don't know what kind of home remedies can help me heal, if there even are any.

Has anyone ever had a problem similar to this before? It doesn't necessarily have to be from gun fire, but any loud noise in general. If so, did you need medical assistance or did it just go away?

Starting to think I'm going deaf!

Baumy, I would give it this weekend, and if does not subside I would go to the doctor. In fact, I would go ahead and make the appntmnt tmrw. A lot of of people have done the exact same thing, and it typically goes away in 2-5 days, but don't mess around bro.

Good luck, and keep us informed.

Thanks for the information buddy. I will honestly sleep better now that I know it normally subsides in that time frame.

I have a physical on Monday morning, so if it doesn't go away by then I am definitely going to ask the doctor.

I need the ear to be functioning properly though because I need to take the hearing test for the physical. I got hired as a police officer and that's why I was practicing my accuracy

I think you will be OK, I probably is like going to a rock concert. Give it some time. Then if it doesn't get better go to a doctor.

You should be fine. Many guys involved in shootings often have temp hearing loss. If it doesn't go away in a week or so then you might wanna see a doc just to get checked out.

Re: I believe I severely damaged my ear

I remember in the army, I was at the base armory (I was a clerk ther for a while). So some stupid soldiers who take care of the commander in chief weapons (they have to bring it for a check every month) brought one of the weapons (a mini-Uzi, maybe) with a magazine inside the weapon! And the soldier who takes care of the weapons (she wasn't a smart lady but her job was to check and fix them) didn't pay attention and cocked the weapon (sounds bad, if that's how you call it) and shot - and the bullet flew around where I was standing. She was sure it hit me and she started crying and yelling and it took us some time to calm her down. Wow that was some event!
Anyway, to the point, the armory was a 2 or 3 small rooms with a high ceiling. So the sound of the shot was very loud and had an echo - more than it would if it was shot outside. After that I had those ringings and I was scared of it. But after a day or two it disappeared but I still can hear a little sssshhhhhhh in my ear when everything's quiet. What I want to say is that you should give it some time, but anyway I'd recommend seeing a doctor.

Geez...nothing is worse than ignorance and guns. My worst fear is something along those things or a training accident.

We had a guy shooting on the range and someone was doing something with their firearm behind him on the bleachers and fired one off near him. Scared the crap out of everyone.

Yeah, it's been a couple days now and the ringing is barely noticeable in my left hear. I'm starting to get back to normal hearing wise.

If anything, I can say I learned a very valuable lesson throughout this.

Granted this is pretty much the equivalent of putting your hand on a hot burner and then saying "I should known better" but so it goes.

Glad to hear the ear is getting better. If you learned from the whole ordeal then it was worth it.

Dont worry, it will come back. I lost a good portion of my Hearing in the Army because i only wore 1 earplug. Either way, you have to fire alot without earplugs to really damage your hearing.

Wear your ear Protection from now on and youll be fine...
