Re: 8 yr old kills 2, including father
I can understand farmers and hunters, but beyond those groups, why is the right to bear arms so important? Being serious, just curious.Comment

Does this work?
No idea how accurate these numbers are, but if they're even close to accurate, it should give you an idea.
Twelve months after the law was implemented in 1997, there has been a 44 percent increase in armed robberies; an 8.6 percent increase in aggravated assaults; and, a 3.2 percent increase in homicides. That same year in the state of Victoria, there was a 300 percent increase in homicides committed with firearms. The following year, robberies increased almost 60 percent in South Australia. By 1999, assaults had increased in New South Wales by almost 20 percent.
Two years after the ban, there have been further increases in crime: armed robberies by 73 percent; unarmed robberies by 28 percent; kidnappings by 38 percent; assaults by 17 percent; manslaughter by 29 percent, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
And consider the fact that over the previous 25-year period, Australia had shown a steady decrease both in homicide with firearms and armed robbery --- until the ban.
That said, I don't own a gun and probably never will.Comment

Re: 8 yr old kills 2, including father
My opinion might differ if I lived in either of the Kansas City's given they are both in the top 25 of most dangerous cities. I've always found it weird how two of the most dangerous cities, can be near two of the least dangerous cities.Comment

The cops know the damned rules, you don't question a minor without a guardian or attorney present, period. They don't follow them, anything they get from breaking the rules should be thrown out.Comment

All that I'm saying is the kid shouldn't get any sort of lighter sentence or anything else simply because the cops didn't follow their own rules. I'd rather the cops be fired before he gets any sort of lesser punishment because of a technicality.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

In this day and age, there are far too many people out there that are willing to shoot you for the most minute things, thus is why I carry one to protect myself for these "wimps".I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I own one for protection. I have a permit/license to carry a concealed weapon and I do. Never had to use it thankfully.

About 30,000 people are killed by guns in America every year -- 60 percent of those deaths are suicides, still a high number, but then you have gangs, crimes with firearms used. Far more people are killed by motor vehicles, about 40,000 a year. About 200,000 die from medical malpractice every year.
The number of crimes stopped by citizens having the right to bear arms in a study done in the 90s was about 80,000. I guess that's arguable as any statistic is, but accidents are going to happen. Gun accidents are going to get the headlines (doh!).
We live in a violent country. Trying to say that it's okay to have the gun for hunting, but not self protection isn't even a debate in my book. I don't hunt, won't shoot an animal, but have a gun next to my bed.
Having been a cop I can't tell you how many times I saw victims who might not have been victims had they a gun in their home.
This was a gun tragedy that made headlines, as usual.
Take a look at the burglary stats of the USA compared to other countries.
Burglary is usually defined as entering a home/business, but I do know that as a law abiding citizen I'm not going to confront a burglar in my house with a stick, mace, or anything else but my firearm.Last edited by jim416; 11-09-2008, 06:45 PM.Comment

Re: 8 yr old kills 2, including father
Well let's say mom was a divorced parent in Tuscon, Arizona, and grandma and grandpa were on their way out long before dad. There is an eight year old child with a gun that probably still has rounds in it and has already taken out his sperm donor. Who's to say what he's going to do next? The police are to wait before somebody comes to represent him, while he could simply go on a rampage? Maybe it won't be another person, maybe it will be his dog, maybe it will be himself...
What?Comment

Chaos, I should have put that in quotes, I drew a line to separate that remark from what I wrote. My mistake.Comment

Re: 8 yr old kills 2, including father
You don't arrest juveniles. Arrest is too strong a word for our justice system, lol.
You take them "into custody" and the rules/laws for taking a juvenile into custody are a lot more lenient, a lot more, than for an adult, for example, the protection of that juvenile (society) whether they have committed a crime, or not.Comment
