Contractor Discovers $182,000 of Depression Money.

"John Chambers, an attorney for Reece, said Kitts rejected his client's offer of a 10 percent finder's fee and demanded 40 percent of the small fortune.
Reece has no intention of backing down in the face of what she considers a shakedown, Chambers said.
Kitts asserts he found lost money, and court rulings in Ohio establish that a "finders keepers" law applies if there's no reason to believe any owner will reappear to claim it."

I believe the owner should get most of the money but only giving 10% to the finder is insane! Greedy people these days. I hope they both dont get ****.

That's an old story. I don't have the link and it was settled maybe a week or 2 ago. They couldn't agree on an amount to split, so they went to court. After going to court, the lawyer for the relatives of the previous owners of the house found out about it. The lawyer for the estate then got involved and won. Taking all but a grand or 2 that the contractor got. If they would have settled out of court, the estate would never have found out and they could have kept the money, but because they were both greedy, they lost almost all of it.

The finder was entitled to nothing. 10% was generous. It was a remodel job. Any contractor would have found it. Its not like he was Indiana Jones and fould the holy grail out in the jungle and someone wanted to take it away. He was in someone's house. Its not finders keepers. Imagine what your crazy uncle Larry would do at thanksgiving if it was finders keepers inside your house......."I found this in your sock drawer, finders keepers...Huh Huh..."

Even though the contractor was technically "entitled to nothing", I feel no sympathy for the homeowner, either.

She knows good and well she wouldn't have found that money for real......... I would at least have cut him 20-25%.

I think it's good that the homeowner took an "L" on this one.

Riiiiight...if you were the homeowner you'd willingly give up all that cash to a money grubbing contractor who was just doing his job? Like fistofrage said, it's not like he went all Indiana Jones or Lara Croft...10% and he's lucky to get that.

              Well, it's all hypothetical............

Personally, if I had factored in the fact that there were heirs involved along with the fact that I would not want this to spill into court if I could at all help it, yes, I would have very little problem letting contractor get $45,500 of the cash. I would still have a very healthy portion, plus I would feel some responsibility for "doing a right thing" in that regard.

The broad played a game of Deal or No Deal, and she said "No Deal" and got burned. I would have taken the deal.

Actually there is the Finders Keepers Law in some states and from my understanding that law was in this state.

The contractor could have easily have kept his trap shut and just kept it all.

40 percent might have been a bit steep but 10 percent definitely was cheap. I bought the house, hired you (to which I STILL have to pay you when the job is done) and that's alot right there. I appreciate you didn't straight up rob me thus about 25 percent is just about right. That's how I would have seen it.
