Sports Journalism
Any one into Sports Journalism? I am soph. in high school, and sports editor of my paper. I really like to write about sports, but the salary is a bit scary... Any one of you guys have any advice or have any experiences in this field?

Re: Sports Journalism
I graduated from Northern Iowa with a English major and Journalism minor but never used it. My last semester of college I wrote for a newsletter for a local health store but that was the extent of it. I was offered a job with the Waterloo Courier after college in the sports department (low level covering local sports in a 20 mile radius) but turned it down. This was January of 2000 and the starting pay was $8.50 per hour. I didn't want to work my way up so I ended up going into management and sales.
I hate to turn you off because if it's something your really want to do, go for it. I was young at the time and was looking at money first. It's a tough field but very rewarding according to some people I know who have worked their way up since college.GT: Herkyalert

Re: Sports Journalism
I started as a journalism major but dropped it after my freshman year. Salary was one of the bigger reasons, wasn't a big fan of the schedule (weekends and nights) either. That and the department head was a total prick and turned me off.

Re: Sports Journalism
I'm a junior at Penn State in Journalism... I'm on the broadcast track though. We've got a Sports Journalism program here, and I actually have to apply to that very soon now that I think about it.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? Journalism sucks.
I make less than 35k a year.
Find something with money in it!
All kidding aside, if you have a passion for ruining people's lives with sould shattering stories I'd say Journalism is the right career path for you!http://flotn.blogspot.com

Re: Sports Journalism
If it's something you love, don't let the salary bother you. Just prepare to live an economic lifestyle. I've been doing radio for almost 10 years, most of it in sports. The pay isn't great but the perks are awesome.Comment

Re: Sports Journalism
But getting sent to New Orleans for a week this year to help cover the BCS National Championship game and spending 10 days in Daytona Beach, FL for the Daytona 500 is great.
Nothing like getting paid to sit on the beach.
I look at the job with the mentality that if you work hard, you will be rewarded. It might not be monetarily, but the people you meet and places/things you see will usually outweight the money.
Just my two cents. It does take a passion and drive. If it's something you really love, I say go for it.Comment
