I'm the same way, my buddies call me Mr. FYI.....when I lived in New York I was hopin I'd find that cash cab.

Suppose you try teaching a person something on a chalk board but they learn better by doing things hands on.

You see, what you're saying cannot be true because we all learn different ways.

In Stumble's case, he's probably a very detailed person. Some people love math and can seemingly do it with no issues. Some are good at English and get top grades in school, some just have that gift for speaking.

Am I less intelligent because I cannot multi-task but I can use the one thing I have to the fullest capability without seemingly much effort?

Its such an umbrella term that you cannot pinpoint it to one specific thing.

You could be clever, or quick, but neither is greater than say when a person is rational, or just a good problem solver.

Although my way may not be politically correct or correct on any level, it's what I use to determine intelligence. Keep in mind I don't scrutinize the intelligence of children, because they're all just growing. My gauge is meant for my peers and elders.

Doesn't make a difference. Point is people learn in different ways and react in different ways to different things. To measure that by one standard is wrong.

There are a ton of smart people out there bookwise, but have absolutely no common sense whatsoever.

Now as far as the age in your life, you begin developing those traits as a child, it doesn't begin in adulthood.

There is a HUGE difference between having a good memory and being intelligent. These people who you think are booksmart, but have no common sense, probably aren't that smart at all. Just have a good memory.

Intelligence requires understanding of outcomes based on actions and other abstract reasoning. Therefore, I would argue that someone without common sense either is smart but would have some mental disorder where they intentionally sabotage themselves or they most likely have a good memory and did well in school but really don't have intelligence because they are unable to anticipate the outcomes of their actions.

I think you need a relatively good memory to be smart because you have to retain your knowledge, but a good memory doesn't make you smart. And thats the problem with our educational system, I would bet a person with a good memory coasts through our school systems, because all you have to do is spit back out what the teachers just told you. You really can't measure someone's raw intelligence until you get into areas of abstract math. Because even fool with a good memory could know when and where to pop in a formula without ever really understanding the reasoning behind it.

                  Re: Intelligence

I think this entire thread is right.

There is no true measure for intelligence. It's kind of like fielding in baseball. No true metric exists that clearly demonstrates a person's intelligence level.

That being said, we all judge and intelligence is one of the first factors we might judge a person on, outside of looks.

I know for a fact that because I'm aware that intelligence is found in different walks of life, I judge a person's intelligence by their ability to make other's believe they are intelligent.

By this, I mean, keeping yourself in areas that best express your intelligence.

I don't get into many political debates because I don't know much about politics. I love sports, but you don't find me in the football and hockey threads because my knowledge of both sports is terrible, though I do like to watch them.

I keep myself in conversations and areas of interest that showcase my skills. It's probably my biggest advantage in life, knowing where to be or how to construct a sentence/question/answer so that it always leans on making me appear to be the smarter one.

If I find myself in a situation where I know I'm not capable of keeping myself at a higher or equal level, I find a way to get out of it.

But, of course, there are also the situations that you want to appear less intelligent. I pick those situations, and I put myself in those for a future advantage.

When I see people that behave in that way, I consider them intelligent.

Perhaps in short, intelligence to me is figuring a way around a situation/problem that you immediately realize has an upper-hand on you.

This is also why I hate the SAT.

                    Re: Intelligence

I should also add that this sort of problem solving and pattern recognition is why I'm a firm believer in IQ tests. I think they are the closest to figuring out an accurate intelligence.

Mostly, if not, everything that was mentioned here as being factors of intelligence can be demonstrated through problem solving and pattern recognition.

Knowing music off a few notes? That's pattern recognition and it's tested in an standard IQ test.

Common sense can be measured through the problem solving questions in an IQ test.

Language can also be measured through problem solving in IQ tests as those tests may specifically word a problem to create confusion. A strong grasp on the language helps avoid those issues.

The problem I have with tests like the SAT is that most of the questions are based on a knowledge of a specific formula or set of rules. I have a hard time connecting intelligence to knowledge. I think they are two separate things.

They are totally separate things....Knowledge is retention, where intelligence really has nothing to do with retention. An intelligent person can tell by sequences or patterns or logical outcomes. They can comprehend readings on subjects they are unfamiliar with because they understand the logical outcome of that reading. Where someone may be knowledgeable but really has just committed to memory what they have seen or read. You could be an idiot and memorize a manual on plasma TV's and seem knowledgable on the subject. Where an intelligent person could look at the insides of the TV and understand why the picture is transmitted in the way it is because they have understandings of the logic behind the makeup of the television because they would relate it to something they know and flow through the sequence of actions that would make it work.

Just like History, you could recite quotes and name dates and seem knowledgable. But an intelligent person would see trends while studying history and realize the correlation between event A and event B and draw conclusions of possible outcomes of event C that is happening in the present.

That was my problem for a while in grade school, I even had to attend a tutor(during school) to try to help me. I finally realized I was better at learning hands on, and that helped me tremendously. Nowadays, I can be taught either way, but still learn better doing things "hands on".

Going back to the original post, I disagree with this. I was in the gifted program in school and many of the kids there could not spell, myself included. I cannot spell phonetically and if spell check did not exist, I would have to look words up all the time. These are all kids with IQs of 130 and above. Everyone excelled in different areas and some didn't have much commonsense, but everyone was intelligent.

The IQ test is standardized, but then there are also other parts included, interviews and test in person with shapes, patterns, verbal questions, etc. I think that is the best test of true intelligence. It has nothing to do with actual "knowledge"/memorization, but how you solve problems.

Multiple intelligences basically is the little league rule. Make everyone feel good about themselves.

Intelligence pretty much boils down to abstract reasoning and the understanding of future outcomes based present actions or circumstances.

I can appreciate people with talent in dance, charisma, etc. But lets face it, with multiple intelligences theories, a typical hot chick at the club who is shaking what her mama gave her and getting men to buy her drinks is practicing multiple intelligences based on that theory.
