With that said, all circumstances are different.
I've also never been in the car accident - so wearing a seatbelt seems pretty pointless....

Well, until I don't wear it and get thrown through the windshield.

Just because something hasn't happened to you, doesn't mean it can't or won't.

I've never gotten the flu before either, but I still go and get the shot.

They're far from pointless - they'll protect you against most strains of the flu, so that you don't get sick, and so that you don't pass it on to other people. I fail to see how that's pointless. But, hey - if you want to risk catching a virus that a 5 second shot would have otherwise rendered you immune to, then have fun.

It seems people are unaware than the flu can and does kill a lot of people every year. By not protecting yourself against strains, you're risking other people. Sure, most people here will get over it - they're old and young enough (not too young, not too old) for their bodies to handle it... It kills a lot of seniors, and it kills children every single year. The flu isn't a joke, and not getting a flu shot it downright irresponsible.

I should add - the most bothering aspect is those who have kids who don't bother getting the shot... I'm going to guess you don't bother getting your kid the shot either. That's the worst part. The flu can kill children - it kills them every year... Why not protect them against most strains. Sure, they can still catch other things, and they can still catch new strains - but you're at least protecting them against the ones you can. Now why wouldn't you do that?

It just bothers me because I'm going into the health care industry - and I'll tell you first hand that it ****ing sucks to have to watch some kid in the hospital dying from it because their parents were stupid enough to not bother getting them protected against a strain they could have prevented by a free shot at their local clinic that would take literally 5 seconds to inject.
You do have a good point. The flu does kill a number of individuals every year. However you are leaving out that most of the people that do die are also immunocompromised because of some other illness, i.e. cancer patients on Chemotherapy/radiation, or HIV+.

You're right that the flu vaccine is taken in hopes of a phophylactic to most kinds of flu viruses. However, there are so many strains of flu. So, if you had gotten the flu vaccine and caught one of those strains, the dosage now becomes a placebo.

A flu shot soapbox? Who knew?!

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Flu shots are a percantage game...the amount of strains out there is in the hundreds if not thousands.

Health organizations determine which 3 strains will be the most likely to pop up during the winter and include those in the innoculation...not really that reliable if you ask me.

I certainly see your point. I just don't think you'll change my mind on getting a flu shot as I don't think they are that reliable (and I could be sorely mistaken as I've never claimed to be a Dr ). If I get the flu from not getting a flu shot, then I guess that will be my own fault. I'll have to deal with it then.

Flu shots work great for me. Haven't gotten the flu since I started getting them. Only side effect was sometimes vomiting the night of once and that's all
