    New Years Resolutions

Is it just me or does anyone else think they are stupid? Why do you have to wait until the new year to stop doing something you want to quit? I never understood it.

It's not that you have to wait until the New Year... for me, it's more of a... okay, this is finally it, I'm done.

      People like even things.

When it comes to things like diets, working out, quitting smoking/drinking, etc. People always start at the beginning of a week or a month, a year is just more climactic, I guess.

I don't think it's an main reason, but beginnings of weeks/months/years make for an easy benchmark and an easy start date.

I agree that there is no better time like the present, but many people view the change of the year as starting over or starting with a clean slate.

I think they are dumb idea. Most people who say they have a new years resolution never go through with it anyways. If you want to change something in your life, don't wait until the new year to get started. Putting it off makes it just that much harder to begin.

Well that's true but it also is a time for people to think about setting a goal to achieve. It's a new year, a new start etc. etc.

PS: The cigarettes are gone in '09 from my life!

Who even follows their New Year's Resolutions? I don't know what mine were last year. I don't even know if I made any.

              Re: New Years Resolutions

I believe people use it to make themselves feel better. Though it may work for some, most people give up after a few weeks in.

It's kind of like someone who wants to stuff their face during the holidays. They'll say, starting 2009, I'm going to lose thirty pounds. They put this little positive seed in their head, and they keep stuffing their facing, since, according to their Resolution, the weight is going to be gone in 2009!

Personally, I think they are useless. If something is meant to be done, you can start it any given day. You don't need to wait for the new year.

But do you not agree that the idea of a New Year's Resolution somewhat 'forces' the idea of stopping/starting something new into the mind, even if subliminally?

I definitely agree with that, though, most people who start (I won't say all since there are some people who will accomplish their goals) these Resolutions, usually give up after about a month. But you are correct when you say the idea is brought into their mind; it's very psychological. The idea of a "fresh start" in the New Year can really motivate some, but once the holidays are over, and life is back to normal, the idea starts to get lost in the mix of the job, schooling, relationships, etc.

That really is when the difficulty begins for the Resolutions.

I wonder what the percentage is of people completing their Resolutions, lol.

I know some who have done so, most notably my girlfriend who give up cigarettes and now I shall follow in her footsteps... hopefully! And just while I'm on that note - it always helps to have someone do it with you or have someone you can follow.

Awesome man and I hope you do. That's why I didn't say no one. Remember, I'm talking from my personal experiences and those around me. I'm making a generalization, but it isn't a crazy one. Doing things differently isn't easy, and when the going gets tough, it's hard to continue.

A few years ago, my brother was determined to drop thirty to forty pounds. He started on January 2nd (the 1st was the last day of delicious food!) and he never stopped from there. In the end, the Resolution plants the seed into your mind, but your heart and determination makes it grow.

                        Good story about your brother.

And a nice way to finish off the discussion!
