I'm not going to get into an argument with you.

He left his window open when he was asleep and someone climbed in. Logic would say that if you're going to fall asleep then you should keep your windows and doors closed/locked.

No where in my post did I say that this gave anyone the right to do it. But, if you don't want someone to climb into your window then you should close the window.

Leaving a window open is in no way a comparison to a girl getting raped. It's not even close. A girl wearing a skirt has nothing to do with getting raped in the first place. Leaving your window open has everything to do with someone climbing through your window.

Maybe you don't agree that leaving your window open isn't a smart thing or perhaps you took offense to me saying he deserved it for not thinking, but lets not throw in rape as a good comparison. It just isn't.

      Agreed.

You said deserved - which is pretty close. It's saying that the thief pretty much had the right to break in to teach him some sort of lesson.

Because you're in the head of every rapist and can confirm no girl has ever been attacked because the attacker liked how she was dressed? It's been used successfully in court in the past by attackers... "She was dressed like that, she was asking for it".

Maybe you don't agree that leaving your window open isn't a smart thing or perhaps you took offense to me saying he deserved it for not thinking, but lets not throw in rape as a good comparison. It just isn't.
I completely agree leaving your window open isn't smart. I disagree completely that he deserved it. No one deserves to have their personally property stolen, or to have their safe-haven intruded upon.

And the rape comparison is perfectly valid. You're just looking at it the wrong way.

You're saying someone deserved to have something illegal happen to them, that they deserved to have their persons violated because they did something silly/stupid. You're basically saying it's his fault he was robbed because he left the window open; which is the same as the old saying I quoted above "she was asking for it...", you're saying "he was asking for it" by leaving his window open.

While one is much more extreme than the other, they still boil down to the same concept.

edit note: and I'm not trying to get into an argument. I'm just stating my opinion that I think it's stupid to say someone deserved to get robbed because they left a window open in their house. You're condoning the thief's actions, and I just think that's stupid.

Well this dicussion just got a little more interesting. FWIW I agree that just because the dude left his window open, he did not deserve to get his stuff taken. Especially for a dude to crawl through with a baseball bat and wake him up and threaten to beat him.

Back to the topic, I remember when I was a "1L". It was a stressful time to say the least. I didn't really get that concerned about it, but all of my classmates were very stressed out and I can definitely see this happening. Good for that kid that he beat the crap out of the robber. The robber is lucky he's not dead.

I don't see how I'm condoning the thief's actions when I'm vilifying the student's actions.

I see what you're saying and I understand your position, but that's not mine. Even if it was perceived that way, it's not mine. Call it semantics then. That's the best I can do to explain our differences here.
