Do you have a 2 year old? Or a 5 year old? If you do not then you do not understand. It is not easy.

I've had 2 at those ages and they knew better. Neither one of them were so undisciplined as to throw a fit in private, much less in public. I'm with you 24th, I don't gethow these people let their kids act up on em' like that. Throwing a tantrum was not an option for me or anyone in my family, and it isn't now that I have my own. You do what you were told, and that was that.

Well it is not easy. Mine does some times. But he is OK for the most part.

You can't punch a 2-3 year old in the face when he or she throws a tantrum like that in a public place?

I think it should be acceptable.

Most of the huge tantrums in public is just bad parenting. Your kid should know better than that once he gets around 2-3.

I think it's majority genetics. Kids are hard wired to be a certain way.

Re: Is this a "my kids arent old enough for me to understand yet thing?"

I don't have any kids but I do have a story from my childhood, related to this. My brother is a few years older than me, and we had just moved to Canada from Sicily. Anyways, the point is, my brother started throwing a tantrum in the first shopping mall we ever walked into. It was a mess. What happened? He got a shot in the *** and punished for a week. I witnessed all of it and none of us ever threw a tantrum again!

Now I don't necessarily agree with hitting your children. My parents were old school and coming from Italy, hitting your children wasn't wrong, it was meant to "teach." But still, hitting your children can have a huge negative impact, that most would want to avoid.

I don't think it is bad parenting, but sometimes, one lesson/punishment can teach a child for life (I still remember that story of my brother and I'm 23).

That's why the butt was made on them. Drop all the items, walk to the car, and have a talk with them on the trip home. Once you get home, correct the habit that isn't normal. Simple as that.

TOTALLY AGREE. Right now, I have a sister-in-law with a 7-year-old. He gets all sad faced when you tell him he can't do something or something isn't right for him. She allows him to watch I Am Legend, Resident Evil, and some of those chick flicks that might show more than his little mind can comprehend. That's bad parenting. She allows him to start crying when he has his feelings hurt. When I was growing up, I got my feelings hurt but I dealt with the mess. She's scared his feelings will be traumatic for his growth. Let him skin his knee. Let him understand when the word No means NO!! Why do you negotiate with a kid that wouldn't be able to survive for 3 days on their own? Why reason with a child who still has not learn the fundamentals of self-control or self-discipline?

Too many parents have the desire to act like the child's best friend. There are countless parents that want to act like they're great parents because they cloth, shower, and feed the child. It is not enough to do the basic necessities. You need to seriously teach discipline, self-control, and other positive virtues. A child that throws a tantrum is a clear mirror of bad parenting. Heck, I have a child that's soon to be born. I don't have the greatest experience of raising a child but I do know that half of this information that so many people give is the biggest load of crock to use on a child. Spare the rod, spoil the child.....degrade the community......

If parents do 't know how to control their kids they need to:

                        1. stay home
                        2. Leave the store immediately when the tantrum begins.

Its bad parenting when a parent lets a kid thrash around on the ground screaming.

Wasn't hard for me. My daughter never acted that way in public, let alone at home. (who's to say my next one won't though)

Yeah...if I threw a tantrum in public my parents put an end to that. They didn't hit me or anything, just gave me a good talking to, maybe grounding or taking away tv time/etc. I wouldn't call everyone with a tantrum kid a bad parent, but a lot of it is just how you let your kids act.

I've seen parents get totally "owned" by their kids...ie the kids swear and completely talk back, slap the mom, etc and not catch crap for it. Then these kids turn out to be screwups, go figure.
