No, unfortunately i've moved around too much and never found anyone. Maybe that is part of why I posted but I can tell you that when I've been with that special someone before in the past i've always somewhat obsessed with this question.

I was watching the history channel last night and actually had a unique thought on this topic. I was watching a show about the apocalypse and suddenly it hit me, what if every living thing does have a purpose and our purpose is to bring about the end of all living things? I know it's somewhat pessimistic but I've never really heard anyone espouse that before in regards to this subject and just thinking about it was somewhat invigorating to me.

Giving life a point is a human creation. The dog, the tree, the rose do not live with a point. They simply live. They don't live for, like us humans do, they just live.

It is in our "living for" that we find perceived happiness, but that happiness is only temporary. When what we "live for" dies (literally and/or metaphorically) we fall tremendously, unable to exist without that thing which we depended on so heavily for our happiness.

When one can live, not trying to achieve or gain anything, without a point, then there is that happiness that can not be taken away.
Everything in the universe has its function. The dog and the tree do not exhibit the same kind of consciousness that the human does, which is the most profound separation of our being. We are the only creature that exist with the dichotomous goals of what we are, and what we wish to be. That "wish to be" is a tool that gives us a clue to our function in the universe. By asking the most honest questions of that wish, we find our function and achieve progress.

Also I have to wonder, is it a human creation or a discovery, this purpose? Some people look at the world and see a purpose already built into it, which is what leads to the questions about this purpose. From the divinity of number to the golden mead, it all just makes too much sense. Tapping into these empirical(s) always seems to reveal power, or truth i.e. the musical scales.

Some humans have discovered that if they simply exist, they may miss something very important that they are already a part of, but not actively a part of. So they(we) decide it is not good enough to exist in the now, but they must also master contemplation.

Without contemplation, we don't "point" our minds in a direction, and anyone who has ever done it realizes that such direction is another tool to unlocking the mind's power. We must also live in the now and fully experience the moment, because there's truth and purpose in that, as well as in contemplation. We have to live, but we must also perceive.

I am not trying to put you down or anything, but honestly with this thread and the other one you made, and some of your responses. You sound depressed. Maybe you should think about seeing some sort of counselor. The is no shame in it. You would be surprised how much it can help.

Heh, I'm kinda in the same boat as ODogg, but I also, in a very basic sense believe in that ^^

Yeah, if you can find the right counselor, it works wonders. I stopped going cause I had a stretch of bad counselors that didn't help at all, but the first one was amazing

Humanity has the capacity to bring about the end of majority of beings, as well as the capacity to foster the living of beings.

A humanity that destroys, its purpose is hate.
A humanity that creates, its purpose is love.

True love is selfless, hate is always selfish.

A selfish human may see its purpose to be destruction, but that purpose is an illusion. It is a belief formulated based on an absence of understanding. The absence of understanding the self, and therefore the absence of understanding life.

I'm pretty sure it is a big part of the reason you've thought of this. Some would even declare you "depressed" to bring up the topic (not I, FYI).

I've just always found there's a correlation to those that do not have the love of another to question man's existence.

We become dependent on them, and when they are gone, we are lost. We try to find someone else to fulfill that need, another "special" person, all the while missing the key. The one thing that is always there, never gone, is ourselves. And when we can love and find delight in ourselves, not in a narcisitic way, we are no longer dependent on relationships. Which is beautiful, because our relationships are now able to be something far greater than they were. Devoid of fear, jealousy, anxiousness, hate, all those feelings that come with dependency.
I don't agree with this. Maybe you and I are looking at the definition of "loneliness" a bit differently but the human need to have a relationship with another doesn't constitute loneliness of an individual.

I guarantee you you can find an individual late in his/her life that has loved/laughed/lived and are quite content with their life, even if they are alone. Being alone doesn't necessarily mean they are lonely, though.

We are in agreement about this. Being alone and being lonely are two different things.

There is no point to life. You can either live life worrying about finding the meaning or just enjoy the fact you have a life.

I'm going to enjoy my life and try to help those close to me enjoy their lives as well.

Well you basically just contradicted yourself. You say there is no point, but you actually have a point to your existance to enjoy life and help others do the same. And thats good enough, as long as your sense of enjoyment isn't having a gathering of your closest friends dress in black, steal my dog and skin him alive atop some ancient ruin.

The orginal poster can say life is not about family but it is.
I too thought life lacked meaning or a point until I became a father 2 years ago.
I live each and every day to make my baby's life better. I want her to have everything and to have the best father ever!
I grew up without a father and I will make sure she doesnt. Until you are a father (and by father I dont meen just a sperm donor) you truly dont know what I am talking about! I am 36 years old now and because of my daughter I do have meening in life. Again you cant possibly understand until you become a father too. I cant wait to get home each day to see my daughters smile as she greets me at the door is the best way I can sum it up!

I did not contradict myself. I never said the point of my life was to enjoy it. I said I'm going to enjoy my life. I believe there is a clear cut difference.

That is wonderful that you love you daughter and are proud to be a father.

It poses this question though: What about the males who can't reproduce? Is this only biological?

I cant answer that question, all I know is my life lacked true meening until my daughter was born.
