    Re: OS Off Topic 2009

Anyone here a geologist or knowledgeable on volcanoes?

Last week I read an article stating there had been about 250 small earthquakes around Yellowstone, and from what I hear, they haven't stopped yet. Now I've read that there have been upwards of 400 total earthquakes since December that have been large enough to be located, some upwards of a magnitude around 3.9.

I know there were like 1,200 earthquakes near the park last year, but there's already been nearly a third of that amount in just a couple weeks time.

    If that thing explodes....****.

We had a convo through text message. Basically I tried to make her feel like **** for ending it via text message. She apologized but I don't know if it was sincere or not. I want to bitch slap her for letting her lack of ability to trust guys get in the way of what was going on between us.

But people don't change, so whatever. Hopefully one of the girls that I'm going to get set up with(I've already got one girl who's bound and determined to find someone for me)is hot and I'll get some strange out of the deal.

Get a cellphone pic of you and another girl with the message "Hey (whatever her name is), tell me how my *** tastes!"

It's all good though bro, better to find out sooner rather than later. Sucks, but at least you didn't spend a year and half with her before realizing you were just wasting time. A year and half of my freshman/sophomore years of college when I should have been spreading my seed like nobody's business.

If Yellowstone explodes, the midwest is dead and the world takes a huge hit as well. Life after wont be too enjoyable for awhile. Geologists dont really know what to make of Yellowstone or anyway to predict what will happen. The supervolcano is "due" so it could happen any moment.

Hey it could be worse. She could've cheated on you, had a baby, then had you think it was your baby for 7 months.

Why worry about Yellowstone? We're not going to do anything about it. If it goes, it goes.

Plus, I doubt anything will happen. Just like the "facts" that the world will end every year from 1600-2012.

                      Here's a clip from Wiki (that's sourced):

Due to the volcanic and tectonic nature of the region, the Yellowstone Caldera experiences between 1000 and 2000 measurable earthquakes a year, though most are relatively minor, measuring a magnitude of 3 or less. Occasionally, numerous earthquakes are detected over a short period of time, an event known as an earthquake swarm. In 1985, more than 3000 earthquakes were measured over several months. More than 70 smaller swarms have been detected between 1983 and 2008. It is believed that these swarms are not caused by movements of magma but of hot water and gas.[9] The most recent swarm occurred in December 2008, with more than 280 quakes detected under the northwest end of Yellowstone Lake over a four day span, with the largest registering a magnitude of 3.9.[10][11][12]

Yellowstone has ways to relieve its pressure, the geisers/hyrdothermal, lava flows and the big boom (last one was 640,00 years ago, ash got to Kansas region). Now some scientists want to drill to relieve pressure but no one knows what would happen and if it'd even help.

I think the professor said Colorado would see about 30ft of ash all across the state if Yellowstone does the big explosion. No sense in worrying about it though.

                        Edit-
Jake Lowenstern, Ph.D.,YVO's chief scientist, who also is part of the USGS Volcano Hazards Team, told TIME that it doesn't appear a supervolcano event is imminent. "We don't think the amount of magma exists that would create one of these large eruptions of the past," he said. "It is still possible to have a volcanic eruption comparable to other volcanoes. But we would expect to see more and larger quakes, deformation and precursory explosions out of the lake. We don't believe that anything strange is happening right now." Last summer, YVO installed new instrumentation in boreholes 500 to 600 feet deep to better detect ground deformation. Says Lowenstern: "We have a lot more ability to look at all the data now.

To me, worrying about Yellowstone is like worrying about an alien invasion.

No one knows if it's going to happen, nothing can be done to prepare, and there's no point in worrying about it.

I would suggest worrying about things that are far more important. Like if your football team is going to win the Super Bowl within the next 25 years.

Because regardless of what apolocalpytic paranoid people want you to think, we'll probably still be here.

Oh we'll still be here but food supply will drop if Yellowstone has a supervolcano eruption. It'll kill off the crops in the Midwest and climate changes will make the world a little less enjoyable. Professor estimated 1-2 billion would die due to food shortage.

I know Colorado has about 4-6 hours to evacuate if it explodes, which will be pointless with the amount of evacuation traffic.
