    Prescription drug question

Girlfriend separated her shoulder at work today and the doctor gave her valium and muscle relaxers.

Is she allowed to take both at the same time, or is that a possible way to accidentally overdose, even if it's just one pill of each?

They gave her Valium for a separated shoulder?

    You sure it's not Vicodin?

Valium is generally an anti-anxiety. Regardless, no, she won't OD off of one. People die on scripts when they take the ones they're not supposed to be taking. The recreational dose of painkillers and benzos that people take are generally 3-5 times the recommended use, and that's where overdosing occurs.

      Vicodin... yeah that's the one.

      Thanks for the info.

Just wasn't too sure what she could take... and if anything could cause a violent reaction as the doctor wasn't really too clear on this subject with her.

Call the pharmacy where you got the pills from. The pharmacists are good at knowing what doses are good and how the two interact with each other.

          She'll be fine on Vicodin.

She probably has 5 mg pills.

To give you a rough idea of what she's dealing with, they would sell for about 50 cents each. If she's in real pain, she will probably have to take 2-3 (unless she's like, 50 pounds), but they're incredibly weak. A recreational dose is about 40-50+ mg. In the drug world, the worry about Vicodin is taking too much of the Tylenol in the pill than the hydrocodone.

She'll be fine, though she may have a little bit of an upset stomach.

(I realize you aren't trying to sell them or get high. I'm just noting that they're incredibly weak and you don't have to worry)

My thinking is that if the doctor prescribed them both simultaneously, the drug interaction isn't really something to worry about.

That said, either call a pharmacist or listen to Cebby, or both.

But also know that everyone reacts to it differently. I've known people that took the proper dose of vicodin and claimed that they felt somewhat high while it was working

My opinion is stay away from any sort of prescribed pain killers...I've seen too much bad stuff. Extra strength Advil is a lot safer in more ways than one.
