What Kind of Sports Fans Are You?

I’ve seen all kinds of sports fans here on this board with regarding to how much we cheer or hate on our home teams. I think most fans are overly optimistic when discussing their teams. Some fans take it to extreme levels and are super homers like PSU_DW2 who thinks Penn State is awesome and USC escaped a Rose Bowl thumping by them.

Then there are fans that are more pessimistic. I tend to be in that group where I’m pretty realistic to overly negative with the teams I like. Some people take it to the next level and flat out hate on their team. A close friend of mine is always very negative. He’s a high school basketball coach who will tell me his team sucks before the season, won’t win a game and then finish 2nd place in the conference. He’s a great coach but is always too negative. They are the Anti-Homer. I personally think fistofrage is like that. He’s pretty tough on his MSU teams imo.

I voted for somewhat critical. I love my teams, but I tend to be very skeptical especially when the Yanks spend big money on free agents.

I'd say slightly homer...but I'm far from a diehard sports fan. I have my favorite teams, but with all the moving, I do tend to follow along and "root" for the local teams as well.

Tough to answer. I will root for my team no matter what, but i tend to over analyze and come down harder on them than other teams. You tend to be more critical of the things you love. I voted Somewhat Critical.

If your not critical and demand more of your team are you really a fan?

Somewhat critical for me, but I often think that's realistic as well. It all depends on expectations for me. Overachievers are obviously given more slack while underachievers get hammered.

I pretty much knew the Yankees weren't going to win a World Series the last four or five years despite all their talent and I said it over and over again. I don't think it was really critical since it turned out to be the truth, but on the flip side some people will call me spoiled and critical for not being happy with 12 straight AL East titles (or whatever it was). I'm not sure how you would classify that.

I could care less about the NFL, I was a Dolphins fan growing because of Marino but I watch the Giants now (though I wouldn't call myself a fan of either team). Last year it would have been easy forgive the Giants if they were KO'd at any point in the post season since they were a Cinderella, this year I wasn't mad when the Dolphins got worked by the Ravens because they were overachievers who had no business being in the post season to begin with.

However, when one of my teams is extremely good I am not afraid to flaunt. The '04 UConn team was a good example, I knew we were the best team in the country all season and knew we were going to win the National Title. In '99 and '00 I was cocky as hell with the Yankees, '98 was probably the most nervous I'd ever been w. them after the '97 post season loss.
