    Teething Suggestions

So the thrush we have been battling on and off since early November appears to be gone. However, we are still battling eating issues. Our little guy doesn't seem to want to eat at times. When he does eat he'll eat for a little bit and wind up crying or just not wanting the bottle any more. According to the pediatrician he is teething.

Have any of you parents out there had to battle a child who doesn't want to eat because of teething pain? If so, what sorts of things have you done to a help them along with eating? Our pediatrician said absolutely no Orajel. We have tried a frozen wash cloth and frozen teething rings and they worked at first but lately he doesn't seem to interested in those. All he seems to want to do is put his fingers in his mouth and chew on them.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure what to do.

What was the reason your pediatrcican said no Orajel?

You may want to consult medical websites or babycenter.com instead of asking a bunch of guys on sports message board.

glad that the thrush is gone ... try motrin a couple times a day ... it has worked well for us.

I am not sure that it is teething.... does he spit up at all?? It kind of sounds like acid reflux- my friends little boy would scream right after he would eat a little bit and when they put him on medicine for it- he is a different baby.

Occasional spit up but not all the time and it is never much. We asked the pediatrician about that and she seemed to think reflux isn't the issue. Last couple days he has stopped the screaming while eating. Now after a couple of ounces he will just refuse to take the bottle. Once or twice a day he will take a full bottle of 6 ounces or 8 ounces right before bed so we started to wonder if he just doesn't get hungry much. Instead of drinking the bottle he would just rather chew on his hands.

The pediatrician told us that she has heard of numerous stories of babies not reacting well to the Orajel so she won't recommend it for any of her patients.

                did you ask about colic?

One of the first times we saw her she mentioned colic. This last time my wife saw her she asked about his seemingly fussiness and she said he didn't seem fussy at all. The doc even tried to feed him herself and saw some of the same troubles we see and she still is sticking to the teething as the cause.

Other than the trouble with the feeding he is a far better baby than he was before so that is good.

We had this cool little thing that you could put solid food in, and our son could "eat it" by sucking through the mesh. It was like a pacifier but instead of a nipple, it had a mesh top. We would put apples, bananas, and even chocolate chip cookies in my son's to get him to eat. Teething biscuits won't really help with the pain, but they may help him eat something. The motrin sounds like a could idea, as we used it several times when he got shots.

I don't want to scare you, but a lady I work with who had a son that had a tear in his esophagus that made swallowing really painful when he tried to eat. Make sure you listen to your gut, and if you think it is more than just teething seek another opinion.
