Sick and Tired of my Immune System

I have never had a good immune system, but within the last few years, it's been ridiculous.

When I go out with my friends, some wear track suit jackets or unzipped winter jackets with a t-shirt underneath even though it's -10 to -40 Celsius outside (with windchill).

With me, I wear a thick sweater and a winter jacket with scarf and toque, but will get sick allll the time -- this includes very bad sore throats, the flu and head colds, that prevent me from sleeping, etc.

Now, I know it's not the actual 'cold' that makes people sick, but rather how cold negatively affects our bodies, thus letting germs empower our bodies.

So ya, what can I do? I am sick and tired of getting sick every time I go out, it seems. Usually Im sick for the whole winter, which is Canada, is very long.

Wow that sucks. My immune system is pretty great. I'd try finding some immune system booster drinks and foods and drinking those. Also try eating yogurt every day

Aren'y you the same guy with intestinal problems? Your immune system is over worked trying to combat other issues. You have to get to the root of the problem before you will fix this.

I hardly ever get sick, but I did get bite last week by the Flu bug that has been making its rounds.

        It was not fun.

There are some OTC stuff you can take that is supposed to stop you from getting sick when you start feeling it coming. I think it is called Zicam or something like that. It won't stop it all together, but is supposed to shorten it and keep it from staying in you.

Your getting the common cold a lot because your immune system is fighting something else off. Your immune system isnt stoping any of those germs, that it normally would. I would recommend seeing your doctor from their he/she can do labs and It should give them a pretty good indication of whats going on.

As others mentioned before me..eat well, sleep well, and stay active. Doing these 3 things are vital to your immune system.

Probably has something to do with your diet, what do you eat on a typical day?

My advice as well. I had mono when I was 21 and for the next year or so I was sick every month and it was horrible. Exercise, drink a ton of water, and sleep as much as you can. The better your body feels the better it can fight off the germs.

Re: Sick and Tired of my Immune System

Sorry, I was away from the computer all day.

Yes, I am the guy with Ulcerative Colitis. When I was younger I was always playing soccer, football, backetball, tennis, etc -- I was sooo active.

As I began to study more, I stopped being as active but still played on a team or two. And then last year, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, although I did have the symptons for a lot longer.

But when I was young I ALWAYS suffered from extreme cases of sore throats and had tubes put in my ears twice -- I had a lot of ear infections.

As I got older, I noticed I'd get sick in November, and it would stay with me until spring, no jokes.

So yes, the clu/colds are connected in some way to UC, but doctors wont give me answers -- my gastro seems to know even less than me, which sucks.

As for what I eat daily:

I drink 4-5 bottles of water
3-6 pieces of fruit (mostly apples)
A sandwhich on most days, with mortadella
Cereal in the morning with lactose free milk
And then dinner, will be fish, chicken breast or pork, with rice or something healthy, and salad

I eat fast food like once a week, if that -- when Im no where close to home.

And yes, being sick ALL THE TIME sucks and prevents you from doing so much and what I do get to do, is done while feeling like CRAP!

I used to get tonsilitis 6-8 times per year and was always getting colds, sore throat etc and i started taking this stuff called inner health plus (one tablet each morning) that is filled with billions of "good" bacteria and i haven't been sick in over a year and a half.

                    The bottle looks like this:

Of course this was an Australian product but they'd have to have probably 20 versions of something similar there in the US. It's not cheap but it's definetly worth it imo...

Re: Sick and Tired of my Immune System

I used to have that problem as well, but after I finally changed my diet and started eating better (including cutting out soda) I rarely get sick anymore.

From the looks of it you have that down already, so that's probably not your problem. Hope you figure things out.

I started taking vitamin C pills. and now I take Vitamin B+C. I haven't had a major sickness so far this winter and I usually would have one by now.

Also, to boost your immune system, try eating yogurt with Live & Active cultures.

I don't understand why your doctors won't help you figure this out. Maybe they don't know what's causing it, but they should at least provide you something to help.

I honestly think that most of the advice you're getting here isn't going to work. A lot of us are working on a system that isn't affected by Ulcerative Colcitis. Not to be blunt or cruel, but you're obviously facing a tougher challenge to remain healthy and to keep your immune system at a high level.

No matter how you eat, how you rest, or how active you remain, your body is working more than double time to keep things in check. You might need to start looking for a doctor that is ready to help you take something to assist you or at least ease the pain. The reality may be that part of your condition is going to force you to feel this way every winter. But, you shouldn't have to feel as sick.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer
