Supposed to be GE Money Bank (Dillards card). I called and asked for everything to be sent to me in writing (he tried the we will send it in an email or fax and I asked for an email and postal mail) Not sure how old the debt is.

What is a good place to get a credit report. What all will it show?

The site above was set up by the government, no strings attached. While freecreditreport.com also works, you still have to sign up for a free trial and later cancel.

I've used both and have had zero issues.

EDIT: As to what it shows, it will show all your accounts over the last several years, when they were opened, closed, when you applied for credit and who did the credit check, it also shows if and when you had delinquent payments, etc.

This is looking like a scam. Most legit companies will not email anything to you. If you really owe the debt, it would be easy for them to send you a statement and account summary. Also, you should have received something saying they turned your account over to a collection agency.

I can post the file... it has the account name, account number and amount owed.

I am just going to say F it and if they call again tell them to go ahead and take me to court. I read that they can't garnish your wages in Texas anyway. Not sure what they could do, but not that. Also, it's $800 bucks, I doubt they would go through all the trouble for that, but who knows. I know they have violated Fair Debt Collection Practices.

Like I said, I can pay it... but I have never received anything in the mail saying I owe this.

If you have never been sued for this debt then after 7 years it is what they call a ghost debt. What that means is it will not show on your credit score and you no longer owe them anything. But keep in mind if you pay even a single penny on it before those 7 years you restart the 7 year cycle.
Yeah, I had some debt from 8 years ago or so and when I checked my report on experian.com it showed that I dont have any accounts in bad standing so I guess they fell off after the 7 years had passed. Whats weird is my girlfriend has a credit card, I do not have a card to access that account and my name is not associated with the account yet according to experian Im associated with that account somehow so I dont understand how that happened.

Re: Debt collectors - How do you know they are real?

The same guy called me again and was asking about how I wanted to send payment. I told him I can only do money order or cashiers check, he wanted no part of that and started saying that can only accept credit, debit or checking. He said the client wants to see payment ASAP. I told him there was no way I would pay over the phone that way and he started getting defensive. I told him that I told the other person I spoke with to not call the my place of employment anymore and that I had sent a letter to them stating so. He was like, I don't care what you sent, I am going to keep calling you and calling you.

The guy also said he can tell that I don't want to work on this and he is going to do everything in his power to make sure my credit is ruined, and let the company know to go ahead and sue and start to garnish my wages. He said he was going to contact the head quarters of my place of employement. When I told him that it's not legal in Texas to do, he really got defensive I told him this was a sum company and I know so based on the very first call, with them acting as the social secruity office. then and was like I am done with you and I hope you have a bad day and hung up.

I thought it was funny he got so defensive. Any other steps I need to take here? I hope the calls stop, but I doubt it.

everytime they call you should play the audio from "drinking out of cups" until they hang up.

Settle your debt with the company you owe the money to, bypass the collectors.

How do you do that exactly? If its an outside collection agency then you are stuck as your account has been sold by the original creditor and is now in the hands of the collection agency and there isnt much of anything that the original creditor can do for you. Now if its a collection agency within the original creditors company thats a different story.

This is kinda related to this topic, but yesterday my wife got a call at the house from a debt collector.."attempting to collect a debt, anything she says can be used...blah..blah..blah.." but the collector was asking her about a neighbor of ours two houses down? They asked if she was aware if they still occupied the house and such. My wife was kinda lost with what to say so she told 'em that she didn't know the neighbors there and that she does not want to be involved in any of this and politely asked not to call again.

I told her good job. I mean, I don't want to be involved in this stuff. Once you "rat" out a neighbor are collectors everywhere gonna start calling us for info?

                          Is this even legal?

I really don't know much about him, don't see him often but his car is there daily. No way I am gonna knock on a strangers door telling him debt collectors are calling me in regards to him.
