I use a couple and a few interchangeably(talking about 2-5). Besides that, I also use a pair for two sometimes.

a couple is 2. but not in the traditional sense of 2, because you can have 2 groups of 4 but that is also a couple for example 1:, 2:, so a couple means the twoness of something. in abstract math, it describes the placement of 2 elements,sequences, or objects over space and time.

Most definitely 2. A few is like 3-5 to me, while Several is 5+.

By definition, a couple is two. But I often use it to describe any small number of about two to five.

I think the problem is when "couple" is used as slang, or whatever you define "a couple of beers". Sounds kind of slang to me.
