When is the term "lite" correctly applied?

Is this a real word? Or is this just a way to sound cooler, like having a "z" instead of an "s" or a "k" instead of a "c"? I normally see it when referring to food, as in it is a less substantial version of its normal compound or what have you. But are there other ways to use it in the same manner, or again is it just slang?

pretty sure it's just slang but has become popular enough that it is accepted for things like marketing.

It's used so often for that reason it wouldn't surprise me if it's in the dictionary now.

      EDIT
Here is the definition per Webster's Dictionary.

          Does this work?
