Why do NBA players make so much more than NFL?

Looking over salaries and stuff of NBA players just for fun, I never really realized just how much average players are getting paid compared to NFL players.

The 30th highest paid player in the NBA makes 2.4 million more a year then the 25th highest paid NFL player.

The NBA has 9 players making $20 million, the NFL 2.

NFL has numerous scrub players who still get consistent playing time only making about 500k a year.

Heck even looking through the Cowboy's list they have starters making less than a million a year.

I know the NFL has a lot more people to pay, but players who have done absolutely nothing in their NBA careers are making 1.5 million. I know the NBA season is 82 games, but the NFL players go out on the field knowing they could very well be taken off on a stretcher never to walk again.

Less total players in the NBA would be my best guess. More money is available to pay each player with in the NBA, whose teams have 12 to 15 man rosters, whereas in the NFL teams have (I think) 53 on-roster players and 5 practice squad players.

Exactly. It's pretty obvious.

Not only are there fewer players, but aside from a handful of quarterbacks, individual players in the NBA are far, far more important than in the NFL.

I'd rank the importance of NBA players relative to NFL players like this:

1. Top 5 player in the league caliber players are unparalleled in NFL. Kobe, Lebron, Paul, Howard, and Duncan have value that is impossible to have in one player in the NFL.

2. Top 10-15 players would be about a Hall of Fame QB in impact. Good for probably 10-15 more wins a year in the NBA.

3. Lower All Star caliber players/3rd best player on a top NBA team (Ray Allen and Tony Parker are two that spring to mind) would be the absolute best player at any position in the NFL. They can put a contender over the top, but can't carry a team.

4. Other NBA starters would be equivalent to a mid-lower pro bowl type player.

5. Top bench players would be a high end starter in value

6. Lower bench players would be weak starters on a team

Given how much more important each player is in basketball, their worth to the franchise is heightened significantly.

Yes, but the physical toll of an NFL game is far greater than that of an NBA game.

Less players, more games, and one player can make a bigger impact in basketball than football.

Yes, but then again, it's basically a the equivalent of a car crash when they hit each other.

Let's just say they should be compensated, so their families can help pay his medical bill later in life.
