That's interesting. And it hits close to home, being a college student myself.

I don't know enough about the situation in terms of laws and all that to make an opinion, though.

Democracy looks like a bunch of people barricading a cafeteria?

I was under the impression that NYU kids were supposed to be smart. They were also woefully incorrect on their rights. They also violated the first rule of hostage takings: you need hostages.

Congratulations on throwing away your "elite" education. The level of toolage in that room was enough to inspire jealousy from bandwagon Duke fans all around the country.

Dude seriously. I was thinkin to myself "so this is what they do at that prestigious institution". Although it's unfair to generalize.. I was expecting something "more" from "them".

School really isn't a democracy, there are hierarchs that hold the power.

Not to mention it's a private institution.

I mean I know tuition is basically forced sex, but protesting in that manner probably wasn't a top 5 idea

              "Should we show them identification?"

"They know who I am!" Haha. That had me rolling.

But seriously, these kids were way off base. They kept saying "we're here to negotiate". Well if the school doesn't want to negotiate, they don't have to negotiate.

These kids aren't very smart. I don't really understand what they were protesting against. High tuition cost? Here's an idea, DON'T GO TO THE SCHOOL. Its not like they are forced to attend NYU. I'm lost on this one.

They wanted to know WHERE their 50,000$$ per year is going. They wanted to know salaries and costs and all that junk.

But like someone said... it's a private institution... They don't have to release that stuff.

I think it'd be one thing if it was a state school.

However, they chose to go to the third most expensive school in the country (and only missed #2 by $130 per). Nobody touted NYU as an affordable institution.

To be fair, it wasn't a "hostage" situation that they were aiming for. It was simply a "sit-in" or something like that. They just wanted to occupy the area and be seen, not kidnap people.

Ok, that makes more sense. But that's still no reason to do what they did. And I still fail to see how a university, a private one at that, is a democratic institution.

But they were trying to negotiate.

                        What was their bargaining chip?

"If you don't give us what we want, we're going to make your student body look ridiculously stupid to the rest of the country!"

As an NYU grad, I laughed at this whole thing

These cats were always in the background- I just didn't think they'd be stupid enough to do this. Yeah NYU was expensive, no doubt (worth every penny for me, I had a scholarship though ). However, the school was building stuff constantly all the time when I was there, including the Kimmel Center where these geniuses barricaded themselves.

I loved my time at NYU and being in the city really attracts a unique group of students. You have to see it to believe it. I miss college, this would have been entertaining to watch.

They were occupying the cafeteria and balcony of the student union building. The occupation was their bargaining chip. If the university officials didn't meet with the students, they said, they'd stay in the cafeteria as long as possible. Obviously, they weren't able to do that.

The students protesting in the student union building and some of the students on the street don't seem to have the same idea. I read that some protesters outside had signs saying "Make NYU Affordable," which is just silly because they CHOOSE to go there.

However, I see nothing wrong with wanting to know what your money is going toward, which is what the people inside the student union were asking for. I just don't think a private institution has to do that.
