My mom subs, but she only does HS and tries to only do seniors and juniors. She never really has any problems. You just have to sit there and make sure no one kills each other.Comment

Re: Public Schools... Beware.
I have been a teacher for 15 years. Right after I completed my student teaching, I did some subbing for a couple of months. Miraculously, I stuck with the profession. After that experience, I was convinced that a beating with a lead pipe upon the head and legs would have been a more enjoyable experience than subbing.
In reality though folks, every school needs subs. Just like a regular classroom teacher, a "guest teacher" has to find there shtick and hone it. My hats off to any person that is or is willing to take on the task.Comment

You have the best job in the world. Well next to my job. Sub don't have to deal with reports cards, you don't have to deal with parents. And if you don't like that class you don't have to take that position again. Do you get benefits as a sub? If you did that would be sweet.Comment

Here in Cali you have you have to pass the CBEST and have a B.S. or B.A. The CBEST is pretty easy. The CSET which teacher have to pass is a bitch. I am trying to pass that as we speak. If I don't I will be subbing too. My provisional credential runs out in August.Comment

Re: Public Schools... Beware.
Both ollie, sometimes they call in sick or you have teachers that go on maturity leave, etc.
Anyway, here's some general information for the State of Nevada..
As far as the process, I filled out an application, they sent an email saying what steps I had to take. Which were to provide 3 references so they could send in a letter of recommendation. Sent in my transcripts and had an interview. After a couple of fees aka fingerprinting and license fee. I was ready to go.
For the references, they prefer your current employer and 2 others, usually professors. As far as finding an opening, there are several ways, at least here. They have a website you can check daily that post openings and you can either accept/decline. Another method is they actually call you using an automated system usually between the hours of 6am to 9am and 5pm to 8pm. The last one, which is the one I prefer is after subbing at a specific school, you can add yourself to a sub list and they usually go through that before using any of the automated systems. This way you actually have some sort of familiarity. In Vegas, you could pretty much sub 5 days a week if you wanted to.Last edited by HungryBologna; 03-02-2009, 01:36 AM.Comment
