    Anyone substitute teach?

Considering subbing to make some dough, I wanted to know if anyone had any experience doing this. If so, how was it? What were the requirements? Were you working pretty much everyday or a couple days a week?

There is probably a crap load of other people in your ISD that had the same idea. That is what happened in my town, so many people started subbing this year for extra cash.

The requirements at my ISD weren't much at all. You went to a training course and they did a background check. Chances are you won't work that much for the reason stated above.

i've often thought about it, but i just can't stomach the thought of facing a class full of kids who have no respect for you. besides, in most cases it's not even teaching ... it's babysitting.

My GF subbed for a whole year before becoming full time. She said it was a walk in the park. Your pretty much just a moderator.

I know here in Washington a sub can make anywhere between $120-$180 a day dependent upon the district. My girlfriend is student teaching and will probably have to sub and she can make around $180 every day in her district.

I know Nolefan was a substitute and still might be so you should send him a pm.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

I subbed right out of college for about a year. Stay away from 5th - 8th graders and freshman if possible. They are at that age where they feel they have something to prove and for the most part are all just punks or very immature or both. I subbed K-12 at one point or another and everybody else was pretty easy. As others have said, your basically a baby sitter...keep order in the class room and you'll be fine. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

                    Re: Anyone substitute teach?

I know someone who's been subbing for a few years now. She makes around $120 a day, which isn't too bad. The worst part seems to be the inconsistency. Some weeks she won't have a job, then she'll be booked for two months straight. Oftentimes she'll get phonecalls at 9pm asking to sub that next morning, or at 6am asking to be there in less than two hours. If you turn them down, you're more likely to get skipped over in the future for subs that will work on short notice. So that makes it difficult to have any sort of plans during the week.

That being said, if I was qualified to be a sub and needed the money, I would do it.
