Yours truly ... the latest hit by this (expletive deleted) economy

My newspaper is reducing its editorial staff from 24 to 16 ... thanks to an edict from our company (Sun Media).
Your old pal Dave will no longer be an editor (date still to be determined).
A bunch of editing jobs were centralized (ugh).
It's not all bad news - I can stay on as a reporter, thanks to union seniority and my bosses liking me.

The pay cut isn't a huge thing (being a single dude, money isn't that important) ... but I'm gonna miss the hell out of my current job (wire news editor).

Suffice to say, morale in my workplace isn't exactly at an all-time high tonight.

One of our departments (ad building) got closed down completely.

That said - I would prefer smart *** comments be kept to a minimum in this thread. I feel pretty (expletive deleted) depressed about what's gonna happen to some fellow employees (who have families) and wish I didn't have to use my seniority to bump a reporter. It sucks ... but like everyone else, I have bills to pay.

I have to look at this as positively as possible. If my business does survive, reporters will be needed.

I am not asking for sympathy here, just letting a few guys who know me know what's going on. I am under no illusions - people have it way worse than I do. I feel for them.

It's times like these I'm really thankful I have a job right now.

    Sorry for the hardships man.

Well you're getting a pay cut and changing jobs. You are not getting laid off like millions of people so I can't feel too bad for you.

      But yea it does suck.

I was one of those millions, but have a new job now.

Hardship too strong a word in my case. I'll still have a job, just not the same one and not for the same money. I feel worse for some of my co-workers.

Sorry to hear that dave. It's hitting us in the Television media hard as well.

I'm just living day to day. They've already announced that cuts are coming, just hoping I'm not on the list.

Sorry to hear about this.. I was in the same boat as you -- lost my job in October.. finally back working since January.. I know you are down right now, but just keep your head up the best you can..

On a side note, I just heard that 10 US papers may either go belly up or just to "all digital" format by the end of the year..

Tough times.. Again, sorry to hear dave..

I know how you feel. I've seen both of my parents lose their jobs and reality is at their age (both around 60) (and lack of credentials) they're not going to get many more options. And it sucks right now, life just sucks in general. The "Help Wanted" ad in our classifieds is like one column long with only 5 or 6 ads in it. I have to go back to school in a couple days but when I come home for the summer I'm really gonna need to find something.

Re: Yours truly ... the latest hit by this (expletive deleted) economy

Dont feel to bad, I just got cut from a company I worked balls *** hard for for three years.

Its not all bad as I now get to freelance and they still use me alot, and I make like 3 times as much freelancing.

It does suck to lose all my benefits though and the security of knowing that if there arent gigs I can still go into the office and dick around and make some cash.

I do video production (Im mostly and editor and playback guy) and feel like I was just thrown to the wolves.

I always wanted to go freelance at some point, but definetly not right now. I needed a few more years of seasoning before i could make the jump.

I was extremely depressed for like a week, then it turned to anger at the company for treating me like they did, but it is what it is.

Now I only have to wrok 10 days a month to make more than I did last year, but who knows how that is gonna go.

I made alot of friends in the buisness and already have gigs with some of our competitors so hopefully I can keep my head above water till I can get on staff again somewhere. I hope freelancing works out and i can just keep doing it, cause man when you work the money is damn good.

Same thing happened at my paper. Media General is going through the same thing right now.

I had to take a 10K pay cut to keep my job.

Keep your head up. You'll make it through it.

That's exactly why I spend half of my non-school hours interning.

The other half I spend consuming hard liquor.
