    Sprained ankles?

Well this is something that I just encountered about 3 Saturdays ago. I had never rolled my ankle in my life, much less had any other injury aside from a strained shoulder. It's interesting considering I played football my whole life and basketball up until my 9th grade year in HS. I still play pickup all the time.

Anyway, I rolled my ankle 3 weeks ago. I went up for a rebound and came down on someone's foot. I thought it felt bad cuz I felt the side of my foot touch the ground and then i felt my ankle touch the ground and I was like "ooooh nuts!"

Well I had an intramural basketball game the next day and I definitely wasn't fit to go but I still tested it out and played about 5 minutes in the game. Then I had a game 2 days later and played most of that game on it because we were missing our starting pg. I still hobbled and I think I was like 2-8 shooting. Since then I played on it once, last Thursday and it was better but still was sore.

I'm wondering how long should I stay off of it? And is it normal for it to pop when I walk (sort of like feels like i'm cracking a knuckle but in my ankle)? Any thing special I should do? I iced it and elevated it the first few days.

The only thing is to stay off of it. I've rolled mine once, a few other "sprains" but those were quick sit down for a few minutes and then get back out there. I thought I was better after taking it easy for one or two days, but then I played and it got worse once the game was over and I took my shoe off. Then I couldn't even put my shoe back on from the pain and I had to use a crutch for a day or 2.

The cracking is normal for some people, my ankles do it sometimes when walking or just moving/rotating them. If there is pain or if it never did it before, I would have it looked it.

For some odd reason, a sprained ankle feels good to me.

I'm sure you'd get better advice by googling for a medical site. However, I'm not one to turn down personal advice.

When I rolled my ankle drunkenly tearing down a goalpost after a game, it took like a week for it to come back down from the swelling and different colors.

Are you a fan of buttsecks too?

          lol jp.

But I've googled a bit too. I just figured that maybe you guys would know from first hand experience. Sprained ankles seemed fairly common among everybody except for me for some reason. But I'll probably sit off it for another week or so and see from there. I'm not trying to become a fatso soaking up air.

Do not rush back into anything with them, it can come back to haunt you later.

Wait until you're perfectly good again before testing them out. If only I knew that years ago...I'm paying for it now as my ligaments are pretty much toast.

Three weeks is a pretty long time, dude. Depending on the severity of the sprain, I'd guess that your swelling is down to about 15% of what it was at maximum, that you have some pain but nothing too bad, and the popping you mentioned. If that's the stage you're at, then you should be able to play on it without pain, but it will hurt pretty bad after you're done, and you'll limp for an hour or so. But at this stage, I'd consider it rehab. You're not going to do any further damage to it unless you roll it again.

My son sprained his ankle yesterday, I kept kickin him in it til he walked normal. He woke up this morning and he thought he needed crutches, I kicked him again.

Pain is weakness leaving the body!!!

I played on it on Saturday, it was better but it was sore as crap afterwards. It's more sore now than it was before though. I think I'll take another week or 2 off, then I should be good.

Is it good to play on it every once in a while? To keep it loose?

Its gonna be sore for a while but you have to ice it down. Also ankle strengthening exercises would help in recovery.

It really depends on you. I would ease into it and if you don't experience any pain or swelling, then you're good to go.
